A decade or so ago at #WOWLDN, panellist Victoria Coren mistook my livetweeting in the front row for bored browsing of football news on my phone. Today it's finally happened, I'm distracted from WOW by goings-on in the world of football, of all things – thanks, BBC Sport
I'm not saying it's been a busy weekend, but the progress bar at the top of my Instagram Story has spent the past couple of days looking like this:
--------------------------------------
#WOWLDN #6MusicFest
Sobering comparison of the day so far at #WOWLDN: @JudeKelly_ contrasting the comprehensive, instant, urgent, global response to coronavirus with the ongoing global silence on violence against women and girls
Feels weirdly long since the last proper #WOWLDN – it's only been two years! Back at post- @JudeKelly_ @southbankcentre for three days from today
Got tickets to a couple of @BBC6Music Festival gigs, which I think is about the limit of our potential participation as this first London-based one is the same weekend as #WOWLDN – going to be super-busy now (but worth it)
(Interesting contrast with Carrie Gracie who I recall didn't mention unions once when talking at #WOWLDN about her experience of whistleblowing on BBC pay, but said how daunting the process had been alone)
#WOWLDN day 2! (@ Southbank Centre in Lambeth, Greater London) https://www.swarmapp.com/c/9SWCUacmsDz
…Isn't that what needs changing, not *just* encouraging women to take other, higher-paid jobs? P.S. Join a union! #WOWLDN
Bit disturbed this otherwise good #WOWLDN finance session seems to be taking it as an immutable truth that the kinds of job women tend to take are lower-paid, rather than those roles only being low-paid because women's labour is less valued under patriarchy
#WOWLDN @JuliaGillard on the "razor-thin" political space women have to occupy (not too ruthless, not too emotional…): "Media ppl would say 'Don't say this, don't do that…but anyway, just be yourself!' If I had the poise to be a tightrope walker I might've pursued that career!"
It's #WOWLDN time! (@ Royal Festival Hall in London, Greater London) https://www.swarmapp.com/c/dYDFWn7Qwtp
Happy #IWD! Still doesn't seem to be a national holiday in the UK for some reason but we've booked it off work and are of course off to this year's cut-down #WOWLDN now 💥
OMG yesss @YveBlake of #FangirlsMusical #WOWLDN fame is here in the audience and now she and the @boybandfangirl_ crew are fangirling at each other, this is all just so perfect #LFF
Just checked whether my tweeting from #WOWLDN this weekend constituted a disrespecting of my poll's results telling me not to livetweet it this year… #willofthepeople #datajournalism
We didn't really know what to expect from Gem's Jams event, but it turned out to be a delightful mix of spoken word, music and chat – and some of the absolute best outfits I've seen all weekend at #WOWLDN! 😍
Final #WOWLDN 2018 event is Gem's Jams with Gemma Cairney (@ Clore Ballroom in London, Greater London) https://www.swarmapp.com/c/bU8IZ7jRdEL
Now Tomorrow's Warriors' all-women band are playing to a packed RFH central bar #WOWLDN
Final day-pass session of this year's #WOWLDN is underway now: WOW Den, where people pitch ideas to improve the world for women, and the judges pick a winner to get taken forward
Jude's keynote as thoughtful and inspiring as ever, and emotional too as she touched on some sad personal news as well as her imminent departure from @southbankcentre after over a decade. But she confirmed she'll be back here doing #WOWLDN again next year, "don't worry!"
Jude is talking about this 1989 essay on white privilege; its lessons apply to other types of privilege too: https://t.co/DFen4T5Yl9 'White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack' by Peggy McIntosh. (Reminds me of Field Music's recent single Count It Up) #WOWLDN
The end is nigh for #WOWLDN for this year – Jude is about to give us her annual keynote! She says she's always the most nervous speaking here: she knows she's addressing friends, but we're critical friends, as we should be.
All back together now for Funny Women Showcase, one of my favourite #WOWLDN sessions last year (@ Clore Ballroom in London, Greater London) https://www.swarmapp.com/c/cQgniUbeIwE
Now, @wiilassie has been to a singing workshop for that last #WOWLDN session and she is about to perform! Good view from the members' bar for @HG_Harper and me 👍
Great twist on the "…from history" theme here: most of the amazing young women the WOWsers are telling us about are in fact contemporary, but we need to start talking about them now to ensure they actually go down in history rather than being erased as so many women are. #WOWLDN
Oh btw we ate our lunch watching women doing a bit of pro-wrestling on the riverside terrace, standard #WOWLDN behaviour
Huge turnout with standing room only, and in fact people turned away, for the small room containing the Badass Girls From History #WOWLDN session now – the young festival programmers, the WOWsers, have certainly drawn a crowd!
Another day at #WOWLDN, another meal at @SCFoodMarket (@ Southbank Centre Food Market - @scfoodmarket in London, Greater London) https://www.swarmapp.com/c/k2P0QtIy3CV
OMG I rarely use the official @Twitter app but sometimes do at events so have just seen they've added one of those suffix icons to the #MeToo hashtag, like it's a sponsored event or whatever. Twitter have probably spent more time doing that than tackling abuse of women. #WOWLDN
(That said, I think I do probably go to fewer events about architecture as a result. Yet another appeared in my timeline this morning! #WOWLDN) https://twitter.com/OnLondon/status/972798015063945217
