Only Three NHS Trusts Met 85% Cancer Treatment Target in 2025, Data Shows Wide Regional Gaps New analysis of NHS England data for 2025 shows that the vast majority of NHS acute trusts in England are failing to meet the national cancer treatment target, with significant variation in performance across the country. The longstanding NHS standard requires that 85% of patients begin cancer treatment within 62 days of an urgent referral. However, this benchmark has not been achieved nationally since 2014. In 2025, only three out of 119 trusts with comparable data met or exceeded the 85% target: Calderdale and Huddersfield (89.2%), Homerton Healthcare (85.8%), and Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells (85.7%). Overall, just around a quarter of trusts surpassed the government’s interim goal of 75%, which is set to be reached nationally by March 2026. Across England, 69.1% of cancer patients began treatment within 62 days in 2025, a slight improvement from 67.7% in 2024 but still well below the national target. While 65 trusts recorded year-on-year improvements, 54 saw performance decline. Some of the lowest-performing trusts included Mid and South Essex (45.4%), Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (50.1%), Hull University Teaching Hospitals (53.1%), Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn (54.2%), and Guy’s and St Thomas’ (55.1%). In several trusts, a significant proportion of patients experienced particularly long delays. In December 2025, more than one in seven patients at some hospitals had waited over 104 days to begin treatment following urgent referral, with figures reaching as high as 17% at Mid and South Essex. NHS representatives acknowledged the delays but emphasized that record numbers of patients are being diagnosed and treated, and pointed to the new National Cancer Plan as a roadmap for improving waiting times and outcomes over the next three years.

Promise The article argues that despite funding promises, NHS waiting lists cannot return to the 18-week target due to mathematical constraints, workforce shortages, slow productivity gains and too little action taken too late.

The NHS waiting list crisis can’t be fixed this parliament. Mathematical limits, staff shortages and delayed action make Labour’s promise unreachable, no matter the funding boost. #NHS #WaitingTimes #UKPolitics
