This is "Cherhill" by Walter Steggles from his post-war work, most likely the late 1970s or early to mid 1980s. At the time, Wally was living in Bradford-on-Avon & he painted extensively in & around that part of West Wiltshire #WalterSteggles #Cherhill #Wiltshire #EastLondonGroup

Very often on this day in the past on the internet one has seen the spoof photo of people resetting the "clock" at Avebury by moving the stones to their BST positions so I thought I'd post Walter Steggles' painting of "Avebury" from the 1970s along with the photo of the operation! #WalterSteggles

Here's one that I haven't shown for a very long time indeed! This is a sketch of "Colebrooke Row, Islington" by Walter Steggles that is undated but I believe that it might come from either 1930 or 1931. #WalterSteggles #Islington #EastLondonGroup

This one is a great favourite of mine. It was painted by Walter Steggles from the rear of the Steggles' family home at 94, Heath Road, Chadwell Heath in either 1923 or 1925. This is "Railway Sidings". #WalterSteggles #EastLondonGroup

Here's another one that I haven't shown for a long time. Sadly, this one is only known from this photo of it from Walter Steggles' archives. This is "Stratford Railway Works" by him from his post-war work but derived from his sketch from c.1930/31 #WalterSteggles #EastLondonGroup

Good morning, Jazmin @jazminoideez.bsky.social & thank you, somewhat belatedly on my part, I'm afraid. Yes, it is lovely & its discovery has now allowed me to correctly identify this preparatory sketch from "Railway Sidings" by Walter Steggles that I knew existed but it had no title. #WalterSteggles

Good morning, Quinn @quinnpiper.bsky.social & thank you, somewhat belatedly on my part, I'm afraid. Yes, the restorer did a great job of repairing the tear in the canvas. Here are a couple of images of the reverse of "Railway Sidings" by Walter Steggles plus the two from yesterday. #WalterSteggles

This is "Railway Sidings" by Walter Steggles from 1930. It recently came to light at auction in Bridport last year but, as you'll see from the second image, the canvas was badly damaged. The new owner recently sent me the photo of the painting now that it has been restored. #WalterSteggles

This is one that I can't remember showing here for a very long time indeed & my apologies for the rather poor picture quality of the oil. This is "Wallasea Bay" by Walter Steggles from 1936 along with his preparatory sketch which, interestingly, is marked as being of "Creeksea". #WalterSteggles

On a rather dull & horrible day, I thought that I might show this one of "West Mersea" by Walter Steggles that shows what might hopefully be the situation once the rain has gone! It dates from his post-war work, most likely the c.1970. #WalterSteggles #WestMersea #Essex #EastLondonGroup

Good evening, Trevor @trevorturvey.bsky.social & thank you, rather belatedly on my part, I'm afraid. How interesting to hear that you lived in a house like that. Was it also in Bethnal Green? Here's a black & white photo of Walter Steggles's oil of "Roofs, Bethnal Green" from 1929. #WalterSteggles

Continuing my theme of showing iconic ELG images during the holiday period, here's "Old Houses, Bethnal Green" by Walter Steggles from 1930. It is oil on canvas & it measures a mere 7ins x 5ins! Truly "a little gem"! #WalterSteggles #EastLondonGroup

Good morning, James @nowthenthee.bsky.social & thank you. Yes, Cecil Osborne's depiction of the sky in "Farringdon Road" is superb, as you say. Here's a post-war sky-scape for you in "Redundant Vessels at Rye" by Walter Steggles, most likely from the 1960s although I can't be sure. #WalterSteggles

This is a post-war re-working of one of Walter Steggles' paintings that was originally called "Stratford" but it was sold as "Bow Back Waters" & it was most likely painted in the 1960s, but I can't be sure. It is interesting to see the differences between the photo & the painting. #WalterSteggles

This should have read "1931"

This is one that I haven't shown for quite a long time. This is "The Canal at Bow" by Walter Steggles from 1930. This was on the Lea Navigation near to where the Great Eastern railway line crossed over near the old Bryant & May factory #WalterSteggles #EastLondonGroup
