He was part of a crew of 11 that did not return from a submarine patrol over the Bay of Biscay on 1 September 1942.

Norman was the wireless operator and had reported contact with two Junkers Ju 88s, out of Bordeaux. The last message he sent was an SOS. He and the crew are remembered on the Runnymede Memorial in Surrey.
