The #Tosa class battleships were planned as an improvement to the #Nagato class. Both ships, Tosa and #Kaga, were laid down in 1920. The stipulations of the #WashingtonNavalTreaty signed in 1922 required Japan to cancel the class; in all ten #IJN capital ships were destroyed or dismantled. 1/2

Decommissioned in 1922 in order to comply with the terms of the #WashingtonNavalTreaty, Satsuma was used as a target for the battleships #Mutsu and #Nagato and sunk off #Chiba Prefecture on Sept. 7th 1923. #NavalHistory #MaritimeHistory #USN #IJN #ImperialJapaneseNavy

A victim of the 1922 #WashingtonNavalTreaty, Mikasa was decommissioned in 1923 and upon agreement of all the signatories to the treaty, was allowed to remain a museum ship so long as her guns and engines were removed and her hull encased in concrete.
