Finally got all posters down! About 20 of the 150 I had seem to have gone missing.

At €15 a pop, they're not cheap so please let me know if you find any!

Instead of struggling to survive, we all deserve to thrive.

Waterford needs an ambitious and radical plan to Democratise, Decentralise, and Decarbonise our society, our politics, and our economy now.

Each element of this plan must be both universal and accessible.

People and the planet must be at the forefront of every single policy, and a clear direction
must be set towards expanding the public realm and reducing inequality.

We have had enough of minor market tweaks and pure oppositional politics, and it is the responsibility of all those who oppose the status quo to present a positive and distinct vision, as well as clear steps to reach this vision.

In order for any plan, radical enough to solve our many crises, to be able to obtain the major democratic legitimacy required to popularise and implement it, it must be co-created with everyone it impacts. By empowering workers, carers, and all in our community to speak up about what we need to thrive, major systemic improvements previously considered unrealistic can begin to be popularised.

WE ALL THRIVE logo

…with Universal Homes: Build public homes without income limits using a public construction company, empower credit unions to finance housing co-ops, and implement proper rent controls using a democratically-designed rent index.
…with Better Rail: Advocate for a new direct Waterford to Cork railway, with stations in Tramore, Dungarvan, Youghal, and Midleton. Push for a ‘Cork Road-Quay-Dunmore Road’ Waterford Luas line.
…with an Ethical World: Support Ukraine and Palestine in any way possible, including with Boycotts, Divestments, and Sanctions against Russia and Israel. Maintain and strengthen our military neutrality and empower the UN.
…with Universal Public Services: Remove means-testing of public services such as healthcare, childcare, social care, home retrofits, education, and transport, instead offering them free at the point of use for everyone.
…with Democratic Local and Regional Governments:…

Táimid tinn den pholasaí atá ag polaiteoirí na tíre seo dada ach mionaithraithe a dhéanamh agus iad in iomaíocht lena chéile. Tá dualgas ar dhaoine atá bréan den status quo fís nua dearfach a chur i láthair, chomh maith leis na céimeanna a leagann amach chun an fís seo a bhaint amach.

Ba chóir go mbeadh gach aon duine atá buailte ag tionscnamh a bheith páirteach ann. Tá sé seo fíor-thábhachtach le cinntiú go mbeadh an dlisteanacht dhoanlathach atá de dhíth ag bhaint leis. Independent candidate Killian Mangan believes a lack of local and regional accountability is to blame.

"Matt and Mary - ultimately, you have failed. You failed to provide a 24-7 Cath Lab. It's very easy to just say there's a problem, right? You've been doing it for many years now, Matt, right? To just say that there's a problem. It's an easy thing to do. It's way harder to actually come up with a solution. Ireland is the second most centralised country in the OECD. That is the problem. The problem is we don't have accountability locally and regionally for our health service. It's all centralised in Dublin."

A photo of a sponsored editorial in Waterford News & Star which reads:

Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have failed our generation. Many of those I know struggle to afford rent despite having good jobs. Others were pushed out of the country, away from their communities, friends and families, in order to be able to obtain a better quality of life in Sydney, Vancouver, or elsewhere in Europe. I always tell people that I am experiencing the ‘Irish Dream’ of living with my parents in my late twenties; just like roughly 2 in 3 people my age (68% of those who are 18-34 years old). Everyone knows that these parties continue to ruin our chances of getting a home, and it’s easy to point out their economic illiteracy (or nefarious incompetence) in housing policy, but it is a much more challenging task to highlight a radical, positive, and tangible alternative vision for a better housing system.

In this editorial, I will attempt to do so; in detailing this, I bring my experience in tenants’ unions in recent years, both as an active member of Living Rent Tenants’ Union in Scotland and as a founding member of CATU (Community Action Tenants’ Union) Waterford, in addition to my personal experience living and renting in various cities and countries throughout Europe. I have extensively researched the various housing models in existence across the world, and one stands out for its complete success in avoiding a Housing Crisis despite existing within an economy built on Western values and facing a large population increase in recent years; the Vienna Model.

We know the ingredients which allows Vienna’s housing system to thrive; a mix of expansive near-universal public housing (80% of Vienna’s population qualifies based on income limits), support for housing co-ops, and stringent rent controls which set a maximum rent for each property based on a rent index designed by local government. Taken together, this represents a conscious and complete rejection of the financialisation of homes wh…

Waterford Airport 'tip of the iceberg' for under-investment in Waterford - General Election Candidate Killian Mangan

Killian Mangan, who is running as a progressive independent candidate for Waterford in the upcoming general election, has today called Waterford Airport “just the tip of the iceberg, with countless other examples of underinvestment in our county hidden beneath the surface”.

In his statement, Killian, who also ran in the recent local elections as a ‘voice for workers and carers’, called on other candidates in Waterford to ‘be more ambitious and to get serious’ on the systems which he believes cause Waterford to be left behind.

“As Waterford Airport monopolises the conversation, our county continues to be left behind in countless other ways. The €12 million in public funding requested for the runway extension represents just 0.01% of the €115 billion spent by the State last year, and I hope that all candidates and all voters in Waterford ask themselves in the coming weeks: “is this really the height of our ambitions for our county?” he said.

"Instead of following some other candidates who clamber to show the strongest support for the latest example of underinvestment in Waterford before managing our ambitions as a county post-election, I’d like to push for greater ambition for our county and region”.

“One clear deficit in our infrastructure is that in Ireland, unique among our neighbours, we lack a rail line between our 5th and 2nd cities. Think of how transformative a direct Waterford-Cork train would be for the local communities of Tramore, Dungarvan, Youghal, and Midleton along a potential new coastal route. It could revolutionise our daily lives in a way that a small regional airport, which some of us may use a handful of times a year at best, could never do. I am calling for a review to be conducted immediately on potential routes, and for other candidates to come out in fav…
