Top universities spend £1.4m to bar pro-Palestine protests Charlie Parker, Wilf Vall Britain's top universities spent nearly £1.4 million on legal action to prohibit pro-Palestine protests, The Times can disclose Fourteen Russell Group institutions paid law firms vast sums to force "dis-ruptive" encampments off their campuses with High Court injunctions. Tens of thousands of pounds have also been spent hiring security teams and clean-up crews for the demonstrations. Cambridge spent more than any other university, paying lawyers more than £400,000, according to documents obtained under freedom of information laws. Protesters face large fines and up to two years in prison if they breach the court orders. After a lengthy legal battle Cambridge was granted a 12-month injunction against protests on its Old Schools site, which hosts graduations and the university's administrative offices, and Greenwich House, its financial centre. The sites were repeatedly targeted by student activists as they demanded that the institution cut ties with arms companies linked to Israel. The group Cambridge for Palestine (C4P) erected dozens of orange and green tents, blocked access to university land and disrupted graduations. The camps were disbanded after the university committed to divest from Israel-linked firms. C4P then occupied Greenwich House and the Senate House last year after it accused the administration of backtracking on its promises. Professor Jason Scott-Warren, a member of the University Council. described the injunctions as "repressive authoritarianism". He is leading a campaign to prevent the university from pursuing legal action against protesters. Cambridge said it "sought injune-tions to protect the right of our students to graduate and for staff to carry out their work". It added: "It does not restrict the important right to legal pro-test. There are many ways protests can take place and voices can be heard."
