Most of the Dutch apartment blocks from this period are only 4 storeys high. The popular story is that this is the maximum height from which a mother can still check on a kid playing on the street outside and call out to it without raising her voice. The reality is that according to regulations, a building with more than four storeys has to be outfitted with an elevator, adding to the building cost and subsequent maintenance cost.
