Anyway, the Ruddys are here. #birds #WeirdDuckTime #oakland
Alt text: Birds floating on a blue lake under an even bluer sky with apartment buildings and a green oak-covered hill in the background.
There are about three dozen buffleheads on the lake this morning.
This Monday there were about six dozen buffleheads and half a dozen canada geese.
Last Friday night the beaver was here

A drake and hen duck facing each other feeding on the same patch of aquatic plants, the curve of their heads forms almost a heart shape, it's fricking adorable

It's a good thing mergansers take their baths in the middle of the lake and not in a bathroom, they'd spend as much time toweling off the walls and floor as they did actually taking their bath

A duck with bright yellow eyes and a long wide bill stares directly at the camera
Magnificent northern shoveler from today looking nice and weird

A Common Goldeneye enters a dive into a cold pond, which is still liquid but covered in misty fog
Several Canada Geese float near the shore of a small pond with a dock jutting into it. The Rabbitbrush in the foreground are still holding much of their yellow color. In the background is another larger, half-frozen pond, some cottonwoods, and grassy foothills of the Rockies. The sky is foggy and grey due to light snow coming down.
Two song sparrows sit on the ground on the surface of a trail, near some taller grass. There is some light snow on the ground.

When you think the camera's off on your Zoom call but it's so not.
It's #WeirdDuckTime, and here's one (well actually two) of my favorite weirdos, the hooded merganser.
An American widgeon swims in water colored orange by a sunrise.
6 red-breasted mergansers are swimming to the left. They are perfect ducks with dark heads and mohawks

The buffleheads are back in the lake, and they're our first heralds of Weird Duck Time!

A black and grey duck with a bright orange eye and an alert look. Also, to confuse identification attempts, no visibly ringed neck. Ring-necked duck (Aythya collaris)
A group of black and white ducks, one of which is diving towards the back of the image. Buffleheads (Bucephala albeola)
Five ducks resting on the water in a line, another approaches. Wood ducks (Aix sponsa)
Two large white swans with black beaks, greeting the sun while wisps of fog hug the surface of the water. Trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator)
More from my Thanksgiving morning bird walk - I'm thankful for #weirdducktime. IDs in with alt text.

A black and white Canada goose on blue rippling water. This one has a big white patch on the back of its head, which "should" be black.
Same goose and setting, different angle.
A second goose, with smaller white patches on its face and neck.
Same goose, different angle.
Either I found 2 leucistic Canada geese, or these 2 geese love to play in poop or paint, or they're having a hard time molting 🦆 #birds #WeirdDuckTime
Ah, I’m reminded not to be jealous of people’s hummingbirds, pelicans and roadrunners… I live near a Great Lake and thus winters are #WeirdDuckTime
