And as much as it pains me to say, I think #WMU might edge out my Spartans. But an all-Michigan championship game just makes sense & will be a blast to watch.

Michigan IS hockey.

Western Michigan hockey celebrates putting Kalamazoo on the map Kalamazoo — The question was asked in earnest. It still struck a nerve. In a press conference previewing the national championship game between Western Michigan and Boston University, a reporter asked Broncos coach Pat Ferschweiler how exactly one journeys from Kalamazoo in the upper peninsula to St. Louis. The upper peninsula? “We're in the lower peninsula,” Ferschweiler answered. “It's a real easy journey to make.” That drive down to St. Louis was about the easiest part of the journey for Western Michigan this season, but it left town crowned a national champion with a 6-2 win over Boston University. Crowds lining the streets of Kalamazoo on Sunday welcomed the Broncos back with a parade. Monday night, Western Michigan shared the win with its fans with a celebration at University Arena. Kalamazoo is on the map. “They may not have known where Kalamazoo was before the game, but they sure as hell do now,” Western Michigan president Edward B. Montgomery told a crowd that roared for its team. A public university nestled in the southwest corner of the state, Western Michigan boasts an enrollment of just over 17,000 students. It plays most of its sports in the group-of-five Mid-American Conference. Before Saturday, it hadn’t won a national championship since the 1960s. Saturday’s win changed that. It might change what happens in the future, too.  “There is no vehicle or platform within the university quite like athletics that can have that national reach,” athletic director Dan Bartholomae said, echoing a point he made to the crowd. “And so for us to be out there and help people understand where Kalamazoo is on a map, and then give us an opportunity to tell stories about this great team and all the great things there are at Western Michigan, I’m just proud to be a part of it.” Community support is a big driver of Western Michigan’s success, from sold-out crowds at Lawson Arena to the support of businesses and donors locally. That group is growing. Already, 150 new season ticket holders put up deposits for this fall.  There was hardly an empty seat for the celebration Monday night, where a crowd that packed the building heard from Montgomery, Bartholomae, Ferschweiler and players Owen Michaels, Cam Knuble, Alex Bump and Matteo Costantini. Considering how strong of a crowd the Broncos got in St. Louis, the crowd Monday in Kalamazoo was no surprise. “They’ve been doing it all year,” Costantini said. “The Lawson Lunatics, our other fans, they’ve been showing out all night, showing out in St. Louis. They’re a huge help. They’re a huge part of the reason why we could do it.” Nationally, Western Michigan is the buzz of the hockey world. For the first time in its 52 year history — even longer if you count the days the Broncos’ club team played on an outdoor rink — the program sat atop the sport, dispatching two bluebloods in Denver and Boston University that the crowd Monday night booed on every mention. Players and coaches hope Western Michigan can be one of those top teams going forward, after Saturday’s coronation. There’s a “bright future” ahead, Michaels told the crowd. The sophomore forward scored four goals in the Frozen Four and his gloves were shipped to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. He believes what Ferschweiler has built in Kalamazoo is sustainable.  This was the Broncos’ year. It doesn’t have to be the last one. People are taking notice of what Western Michigan has built, NHL teams among them. One player couldn’t be with the celebration Monday: Tim Washe. That’s because the captain signed a one-year entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks. When Ferschweiler told the crowd, it roared.  There may be other players leaving for pro opportunities, too. That’s part of the deal when winning a national championship. It’s also why amid all this celebration, Ferschweiler has been on the phone recruiting — that is, when he’s not whittling down responses for supporters. He started Monday morning with 758 texts sending their congratulations. He whittled it down to 350-something by the time the ceremony started. “Recruiting season never ends,” Ferschweiler said. “We wish maybe sometimes it would, but it’s great. Obviously, this has drawn a lot of attention to our program. A lot of positive attention. The phone calls are easier now than they used to be.” Ferschweiler sees the respect this championship earned his program. While some folks couldn’t have pointed out Kalamazoo on a map before the Frozen Four, those who watched the championship can see it now. “You have to earn the respect,” Ferschweiler said. “And now that we’ve done it (made the NCAA Tournament) for several years in a row, we have to continue to do it. … We’re super satisfied at this moment, but we won’t be satisfied moving forward.” There’s still much celebrating to do, according to the Broncos. They soaked in the moment Monday, from a limousine entrance to confetti pops and chants. Moments like this don’t happen all the time. But maybe they will in the future. At least, that’s what Western Michigan hopes. It wants to build forward from this moment, now that it’s soaking up such a spotlight. Now that it’s a national champion. Now that Kalamazoo is on the map. cearegood@detroitnews.com @ConnorEaregood This article originally appeared on The Detroit News: Western Michigan hockey celebrates putting Kalamazoo on the map

Ride high: Broncos best Boston U to capture first hockey national title St. Louis — Western Michigan hockey entered Saturday night’s national championship game against Boston University with a chance to reach a high point five decades in the making. Fans flocked to Enterprise Center for a chance to witness history, the bulk of the crowd there cheering for the Broncos to raise a trophy. The Broncos weren’t shy about it: This was their moment. Now, Western Michigan is the national champion. In a hard-fought title game, Western Michigan defeated Boston University, 6-2, to win its first ever national championship.  Western Michigan (34-7-1) took a 3-2 lead into the third period, putting itself 20 minutes away from winning its first NCAA title and its school’s first overall NCAA title since 1965. BOX SCORE: Western Michigan 6, Boston University 2 Boston University (24-14-2) nearly tied the game on a scramble for a loose puck with 16:25 to play. Western Michigan goaltender Hampton Slukynsky slid over to make a save but couldn’t grab the rebound. As a pack of Terriers tried to whack the puck past Slukynsky, he and defenseman Joona Vaisanen laid across the crease to stop it. In the aftermath, Boston University coach Jay Pandolfo challenged for a goal, but officials confirmed the call on the ice. The Terriers’ scoring threats were far from finished. With dynamic defenseman Cole Hutson on the ice, Western Michigan’s defense had its hands full. Hutson made a spinning pass with around 14 minutes to play that fed BU’s leading goal scorer, Cole Eiserman, to the right side of Slukynsky. Eiserman fired, but Slukynsky stoned him. It took but a minute before Western Michigan struck a decisive blow. Two days after his double overtime winner sent the Broncos to the title game, Owen Michaels wired a shot past Mikhail Yegorov’s blocker with 12:44 to play. Up 4-2, Western Michigan stood minutes away from the crown. Michaels made just as big a play a minute and a half later, when he poked a loose puck away from an attacking Terrier that could’ve reversed the control his goal gave. Needing two goals to tie, Boston University pursued them relentlessly. At 8:04, the Terriers argued that they got one. On a jam play, the puck trickled past Slukynsky. Red and white gloves pointed as the referee waved his arms: no goal. The call stayed that way for minutes without a review by the officials, until an incensed Pandolfo challenged the play. And if getting a review took a while, the review itself took a while. It confirmed the call on the ice, no goal. The rest of the minutes ticked down, and Western Michigan remained ahead. Boston University kept up the pressure, but the Broncos’ only stretched the lead. Skating into the zone, Wyatt Schingoethe darted behind the net before laying a backpass onto the tape of Iiro Hakkarainen. With a quick flip, the puck was in the net, Western Michigan led 5-3 and its national championship was all but secured. And Michaels' empty netter at 2:07 only set it in stone. In the end, it helped that the Broncos found an early lead with the game’s first goal. After a tentative first minute with a few clunky turnovers, captain Tim Washe led the third line onto the ice and settled in. After his teammates battled for the puck along the boards, forward Iiro Hakkarainen got it and threw a spinning shot toward the net, where Wyatt Schingoethe’s stick tipped it past Boston University goaltender Mikhail Yegorov. Just 1:38 into the title game, the Broncos had an edge. Up a goal, Western Michigan stuck to what got it here. It disrupted passing lanes and forechecked hard, creating a few more quality chances in the first seven minutes. One came from a cross-ice pass Alex Bump intercepted, causing a breakaway that didn’t result in a shot. Liam Valente nearly scored with just over six minutes left in the first period on a close shot Yegorov saved. But it didn’t take long before Boston University tied the game up.  As Western Michigan goaltender Hampton Slukynsky made a pad save, he didn’t cover up the puck in front of him. Terriers forward Devin Kaplan knocked the puck away from him before linemate Cole Eiserman jammed it into the net at 12:48 to draw even. Western Michigan soon went to the power play, where it tried to take back the lead with a quality chance. Three passes opened up Valente for a shot from the right hashmark, but Yegorov stoned him. The Terriers killed off the rest of the penalty. With 4:59 to go in the first period, Western Michigan got its lead back, again from Washe’s line. In the aftermath of an odd-man rush, Washe set a screen and defenseman Cole Crusberg-Roseen fired a shot from the right circle that beat Yegorov. It’d be the last goal of the period, as the Broncos took a 2-1 lead to the intermission. Neither team wanted to cede an inch to start the second period, but Western Michigan drove the direction of play. Its forecheck continued to create problems for Boston University. Then, Western Michigan’s fourth line made a big impact. Right out of a timeout, Cam Knuble found the puck and skated into the slot. His backhand shot went off Yegorov’s pad, but linemate Ty Henricks was right there to fire it into the net. The Broncos had a lead and now had security, and they kept up the pressure on the ensuing shifts looking to continue building. Boston University kindled some momentum midway through the period. Forward Shane Lachance nearly tipped a puck past Slukynsky but hit the right post. A couple minutes later, a holding penalty sent Grant Slukynsky to the box. The Terriers scored almost immediately on the advantage, with Lachance shoveling a rebound underneath a falling Hampton Slukynsky at 9:18. The Broncos challenged for goaltender interference, but the call stood. Ceding a goal didn’t change Western Michigan’s control of the game. It nearly got that goal back at 5:06, when the puck ricocheted off the skate of Knuble and banged off the post. After each team traded power plays to end the second period, the Broncos remained up a goal, setting the stage for the decisive third period. cearegood@detroitnews.com @ConnorEaregood Want to comment on this story?
