The image is a long-exposure photograph of the derelict West Pier in Brighton. The immediate foreground features a shingle beach in warm tones. Waves are captured with a blurred, silky effect due to the long exposure, creating a sense of motion at the water's edge. Several large, rusted iron support pillars emerge from the sea, leading the viewer's eye towards the main structure in the distance. The skeletal remains of the Victorian pier's main pavilion are visible against a moody, overcast sky. The structure appears fragile and ruined, a result of decades of decay and several fires. The overall colour palette is muted, dominated by deep blues, greys, and the rusty browns of the metal, contributing to a dramatic and sombre atmosphere.

View of heavy grey cloud with light and sunbeams in a stripe beneath above a dark sea with distant white horses. Light reflected on the wet grey beach. The solid black silhouette of a pier extending into the sea to the left.

We're on the promenade set back from a pebbled beach in warm - but not too warm - sunshine. We're not looking directly out to sea so from our perspective the edge of the beach before it reaches the water starts around a third of the way up on the left and rises to over halfway up on the right further away from us. The warm-toned pebbles are dotted with people, striped deckchairs, and loungers, with there being enough people for it to be busy but not crowded, everyone leaving roughly equal space between themselves and their nearest sun-worshipping neighbours. Trousers and t-shirts dominate the clothing; again, it's not too warm here but the view is lovely and the sea air refreshing. The sea is a cool turquoise, flat with our distance from it but with enough ripples of light and shade to suggest a wind roughing up its surface. A few hundred metres out to sea is a structure of rusted metal, unconnected to land. It's the remains of a pier with a metal framework of a pavilion on it, dark, and resembling the supporting frame of a wide-brimmed hat or perhaps a skeletal hub cap resting on the water.

From a 2012 visit to Brighton for #MeerMittwoch today, here's the beach and a view of the famous West Pier. This was England's first Grade I Listed pier, opened in 1866 but closed in 1973 for safety reasons, deteriorating from then on, suffering more damage in […]
