An excerpt from my WIP, We’ve Been Here Before: Chapter Twelve Miss Hypatia lived in a totally normal—if unkempt—bungalow in the middle of the suburbs. It only took half an hour to walk to from school. She had a garage and a backyard, like any normal person who might need to park a car or let a dog run around, and neighbours on either side—one of which stood on his lawn with a hose in hand, watering his rose bushes. His dog, a fluffy little thing with clipped ginger wings, trotted to the property line with a couple halfhearted yips. Finn crouched to scratch the dog behind the ears. “Good afternoon, Miss Hypatia,” the man said in his dress shirt and tie. “Picking up some tutoring?” “Fuck off, Ross Meyers,” Miss Hypatia barked, “before I disembowel your dog to read your doomed future.” “All righty,” Ross said, turning his attention back to his roses. It was all very anticlimactic. She was supposed to be this important, ancient witch, and Finn had really expected some sort of teleportation magic, maybe a flying broom or two, an isolated tower far from the city. Something classic, something threateningly whimsical.
