Keep an eye out this time of year for Plasmopara densa on seedlings of Yellow Rattle: yellowed, vein-delimited patches of the leaf have white down on the underside. It is extremely common!

Spring Squill infected with Antherospora tractemae

A Phyllachora on Holcus lanatus. It forms black stroma (shiny lumps of tissue) on the leaves. This genus has very few described species and I suspect that there are many still to be named.

Bremia cirsii on Spear Thistle today. Seems to be the first Irish record.
#FungiFriends #WildPlantDisease
Mastigosporium muticum, a leaf spot on Dactylis glomerata from Oxford Island. Mastigosporium spores are white and the leaf spots often look like black eyes with white centres. The only other Irish record is from Killarney in 1936!

This undescribed Septoria on Bluebell seems to be quite common. Worth looking out for at the minute, it makes these distinctive brown leaf spots with pycnidia visible as round tan bumps under the hand lens. This is on Hybrid Bluebell at Oxford Island on Friday.

Curious about fungal leaf spots? My friend Ana and I made a video tutorial on identifying them under the microscope. In this video we look at preparing a slide and what features to look for.

Entyloma fumariae yesterday in the nice weather. This had just two British records before Chris and I started recording it, but it actually appears to be widespread and common.
#FungiFriends #WildPlantDisease
Entyloma ranunculacearum on Ranunculus acris. This is one of the rarer Entyloma species on the Ranunculaceae, much less common than the equivalent E. eburneum on Ranunculus repens.

Shepherd's purse inflorescence covered in white rust
Seeing a lot of Albugo candida "white rust" (actually an oomycete, not a basidiomycete fungus like other rusts) on Shepherd's purse around here at the moment #WildPlantDisease
New to me today: the downy mildew Peronospora valerianellae on Valerianella
#WildPlantDisease #FungiFriends
I recently found the downy mildew Hyaloperonospora erophilae on Erophila sp. on dune slack in Aberdyfi. Possibly the first British record though there are some English records of the similar H. praecox and some "Hyaloperonospora sp." on the same host from South Uist.

I saw my first Peronospora ficariae of the year yesterday! Look out for yellowed, downturned leaves of Lesser Celandine with branched conidiophores underneath (visible with a hand lens).

And for anyone who's been looking at Jake's interesting plant pathogens poster on the next board, you can find out more about #WildPlantDisease including downloadable spotter sheets with 10 common species, on the @bspp.bsky.social website www.bspp.org.uk/wildplantdis...
Tilletia menieri on Phalaris arundinaceae (rietgras). Surprisingly smelly smut fungus with good looking spores. Near Tiel, the Netherlands. #wildplantdisease
Telia of Puccinia chrysosplenii (goudveilroest) on Chrysosplenium oppositifolium (paarbladig goudveil), near Nijmegen. Have been looking for this species for some time. Glad that @NielsEimers discovered it a few weeks ago. #rustfungi #wildplantdisease
Mycocentrospora acerina on Impatiens glandulifera. Found in a wet and shady riparian forest along the Oude Maas, south of Rotterdam. #wildplantdisease
Endoconospora cerastii (I think) on Cerastium vulgare near Ede (NL). Thought for a moment that I found Phacellium alborosellum, but this looks very different under the microscope. #wildplantdisease
Another smut fungus; Rhamphospora nymphaeae in the leaves of a waterlily in a garden pond. Neat colorless spores that look like little eggs. #smutfungus #wildplantdisease
#Rust on wood spurge #Euphorbia amygdaloides transformed in pseudoflowers, caused by #Endophyllum euphorbiae-silvaticae, here with Mycodiplosis sp. larvae feeding on aecia (Buillon, FR). Nice specimen giving off a strong smell of mock-orange. 🤩 #Wildflowerhour #WildPlantDisease
Moschatel (Adoxa moschatellina), also called Town Hall Clock, it's a perfect, architectural cube of flowers with a single flower on each face. Some leaves were grossly distorted by the rust, Puccinia adoxae. Host specific only to Moshatel! # #WildPlantDisease

Lots of Witches Broom in one of our tress - think it is a Horn Beam. A bit if research indicated that it might then be ascomycete fungus Taphrina carpini. The rust on Dock leaves is probably Puccinia phragmitis #WildPlantDisease #wildflowerhour
