Keep an eye out this time of year for Plasmopara densa on seedlings of Yellow Rattle: yellowed, vein-delimited patches of the leaf have white down on the underside. It is extremely common!

A Phyllachora on Holcus lanatus. It forms black stroma (shiny lumps of tissue) on the leaves. This genus has very few described species and I suspect that there are many still to be named.

Mastigosporium muticum, a leaf spot on Dactylis glomerata from Oxford Island. Mastigosporium spores are white and the leaf spots often look like black eyes with white centres. The only other Irish record is from Killarney in 1936!

This undescribed Septoria on Bluebell seems to be quite common. Worth looking out for at the minute, it makes these distinctive brown leaf spots with pycnidia visible as round tan bumps under the hand lens. This is on Hybrid Bluebell at Oxford Island on Friday.

Identifying a Leaf Spot Under the Microscope
Identifying a Leaf Spot Under the Microscope YouTube video by Jake Dalzell

Curious about fungal leaf spots? My friend Ana and I made a video tutorial on identifying them under the microscope. In this video we look at preparing a slide and what features to look for.

Entyloma fumariae yesterday in the nice weather. This had just two British records before Chris and I started recording it, but it actually appears to be widespread and common.

Entyloma ranunculacearum on Ranunculus acris. This is one of the rarer Entyloma species on the Ranunculaceae, much less common than the equivalent E. eburneum on Ranunculus repens.

I recently found the downy mildew Hyaloperonospora erophilae on Erophila sp. on dune slack in Aberdyfi. Possibly the first British record though there are some English records of the similar H. praecox and some "Hyaloperonospora sp." on the same host from South Uist.

I saw my first Peronospora ficariae of the year yesterday! Look out for yellowed, downturned leaves of Lesser Celandine with branched conidiophores underneath (visible with a hand lens).

Lots of Witches Broom in one of our tress - think it is a Horn Beam. A bit if research indicated that it might then be ascomycete fungus Taphrina carpini. The rust on Dock leaves is probably Puccinia phragmitis #WildPlantDisease #wildflowerhour
