He doesn't even know if the others are all safe or - and he shudders to think it, clutching at the strap across his chest to quell his queasy, pounding heart - if they're even alive. He should have been able to do something.) "My love." Koray sucks in a breath like a man surfacing from deep water, and he doesn't even get to turn around before a warm pair of arms encircle his waist. He sags backwards into Haurchefant's hold. Gratitude, the kind Koray doesn't have any words to explain, wells up within him.

There. Golden light fell through a break in the trees. Haurchefant could not look away. He was aware, in a distant way, of his breath heaving in and out of his chest until he caught it, held it within him, and even then, he was dizzy with it. It was as though clouds had passed, or perhaps a great fog had been lifted, as he watched a steady line of deer pick their way across the forest floor. He did not blink. Hinds and harts moved with unhurried footsteps, their antlers casting shadows even at this great distance. And then, clearly. A deer. Larger than the rest, with a crown of antlers like the branches of the trees above. It paused. As it turned to look at him, Haurchefant realized that was no deer at all, but a man. The herd continued to pass around him, as smoothly as water parts around rocks. The crown of antlers belonged to a man. Nude and unconscious of it, the man was taller than any he had ever seen before, skin as warm and dark as the tree bark around him, mossy hair trailing over his broad shoulders. It seemed impossible that Haurchefant saw him so clearly from such a distance. Haurchefant. Could. Not. Look away.
