Wondery, reestructuración y consecuencias del cambio de estrategia de Amazon Wondery ha vuelto a la actualidad y no precisamente por el estreno de una nueva serie sonora. Esta vez el nombre de esta productora salta a los titulares por una reestructuración interna que ha venido de la mano de Amazon. Y ya sabemos lo que suele significar “reestructuración” cuando hablamos de grandes compañías tecnológicas. En este caso, hablamos de 110 empleos eliminados y de un cambio de rumbo en la estrategia de contenidos que va a tener consecuencias importantes dentro del ecosistema podcast.   En este episodio me apetecía hacer un pequeño repaso a cómo hemos llegado hasta aquí, porque todo esto no ha pasado de la noche a la mañana. Wondery nació en 2016 de la mano de Hernán López y en apenas tres años ya estaba entre los principales actores del podcasting estadounidense. A finales de 2020, Amazon anunció su compra —un movimiento que, visto en perspectiva, tenía mucho que ver con la fiebre del podcast tras la pandemia.   Lo que en su día se presentó como una apuesta firme por el formato, ahora parece reconducirse hacia otra dirección. Según varias fuentes como Bloomberg o Reuters, muchos empleados de Wondery han sido despedidos y otros han sido reubicados en distintos departamentos de Amazon. Además, la CEO Jen Sargen también deja su puesto.   ¿Y qué va a pasar ahora con Wondery? Pues parece que su contenido se integrará en Audible, la plataforma premium de Amazon. De hecho, Wondery+ también pasará a formar parte de esta suscripción. Una especie de recolocación de activos que responde, según el vicepresidente de audio de Amazon, a un cambio de preferencias del público. Lo que ahora triunfa, al parecer, es el vídeo. O más concretamente: el contenido de creadores influyentes que graban en vídeo.   Y aquí es donde viene mi reflexión. Me parece que esta decisión dice mucho más sobre Amazon que sobre el estado del podcasting. De hecho, Wondery no ha dejado de crecer en ingresos y catálogo, incluso ha producido contenido en vídeo. Pero no ha sido suficiente. La rentabilidad, los costes y la comparación constante con YouTube y Spotify han inclinado la balanza hacia el vídeo y los creadores más monetizables.   También me llama la atención que, mientras Amazon apuesta por los vídeos, Twitch —que es su propia plataforma de streaming— lleva tiempo en caída libre. ¿Qué sentido tiene entonces empujar Wondery hacia Audible y no reforzar Twitch como espacio para el podcast en vídeo? ¿No sería más lógico aprovechar esa sinergia?   Todo esto me hace pensar que el verdadero motor de estos cambios no es el amor al formato ni la apuesta por la narrativa sonora, sino simplemente el intento de seguirle el paso a YouTube. Y, de paso, no quedarse atrás frente a Spotify. Unos persiguen a otros y todos giran en torno a lo que Google dicta a través de su mastodonte audiovisual. Mientras tanto, los podcasters, como siempre, seguimos adaptándonos a los vaivenes de estas decisiones tomadas desde los despachos.   En fin, veremos dónde acaba todo esto. De momento, toca decir adiós a una etapa de Wondery y estar atentos a cómo se mueve el tablero. Porque si algo está claro, es que los grandes nombres no garantizan grandes resultados. Y en esta partida del audio digital, parece que la última palabra la sigue teniendo el vídeo. The Future Of Podcasting Is Here, And It Sucks This week, Left of Dial published its Essential Listening Poll, a compilation of the 100 best podcasts of all time, according to industry creators, writers, and scholars. (Disclosure: I was invited to contribute my selections to the poll, and _Normal Gossip_ ranked on the list, though I was not allowed to nominate my own show.) Lists of this sort, and really of any sort, are inherently imperfect metrics for measuring the impact of any given piece of work. They function more as a sort of popularity contest, one that reflects recency bias and the scale of marketing efforts much more clearly than anything as slippery and subjective as quality.

5) They want video only, made by their controlled pets. When real ppl had a fair shot-erryone chose to listen to real ppl. We all RAN from mouth-pieces so they’ve hired them + a varied assortment of unwashed randos to follow us online, absorb us, flood pods & ultimately try to kill audio. #Wondery

4) Who’s next to fake “fold” bc their attempt to phase-out audio is 100% calculated. They’ve flooded the pod field w/so much garbaj so real ppl can’t find each other anymore. Even Twitter search hides posts, you're visibly choked if you won’t shill, you're locked out. It's all orchestrated. #Wondery

3) Why wld real ppl start a pod now? You get locked into their system & locked out if you don’t play by their rules. It's a waste esp for OGs, unless you’re fine speaking for THEM. Have personally unsubbed from most pods 0 interest in listening to billionaires' sick agendas. #Wondery
