A page of sketches and notes on 5 ways to draw ellipses in different perspectives: 1. Box it up: example is in orthogonal perspective. Draw a rectangle. Find cross lines. Anchor curves of ellipse to the points where the crosslines meet the rectangle. 2. Concentric circles: a complicated one, and the only non-freehand technique i wanted to try. Draw a rectangle. Draw two concentric circles, one meeting the rectangle’s length, one meeting its width. Draw many “spokes” radiating from center of circles. Draw cross lines parallel to rectangles sides where spokes cross circles. Use intersections of cross lines as a guide for curve of ellipse. I hate this one so much, so i should probably drill it the most. 3. Boxing it up but in 1 point perspective. 4. Freewheel it: Draw long axis and short axis of ellipse. Draw curve of ellipse around axes. Probably not super accurate. Probably what my lazy ass will do most often. 5. Boxing it up but in 2 point perspective.

Four sketches of various landmarks and objects, mostly in perspective, with cross lines to indicate where the center of each plane is. The horizon line and vanishing points are labeled in each of these sketches. I really should have used a straight edge from the get go for the bones of these sketches, but I was too proud to think i needed help getting the lines straight.

I still made some mistakes, like not drawing cross lines for the floor underneath the table, which led to the table legs being a bit off. But this one feels like we’re making some progress!

This exercise is for spacing rows of objects at an even distance from eachother. Likely most useful for fences, streetlights, more man made backgrounds. Creating the feeling of even spacing is easily the toughest aspect of perspective i’ve tried to learn so far. But this exercise, using a “diagonal” line between two objects to find the distance to the third, feels like i’m straight up cheating. It’s amazing, and really crystalized for me how much of this concept is built off of the very simple idea of cross lines i practiced in the first picture.

I challenged myself to offset the bottom of each box from the others while trying to keep the perspective clear and readable. A few of the angles are a little wonky (looking at you, floating cube), but these exercises continue to be really educational for me.
