I know I'm biased but this is a great exhibition showcasing #Japanese objects from ukiyo-e, to arms and armoury, to #netsuke. On display until March at Cliffe Castle Museum #Keighley #Bradford @bradfordmuseums.bsky.social.

This is a 5"x7" end-grain glue-up of brown walnut strips and light-colored hickory squares arranged along a thin horizontal dividing line of eastern red cedar. The wood grain is arranged to produce both a swirling wave design interspersed with a checkerboard pattern.

The wood grain nearly disappears in this finished carving. The alternating brown and tan vertical lines dominate the carving, and the bright red horizontal dividing line provides a bit of contrast. A repeating abstract pattern covers the rectangular carving with truncated corners.

This piece was a bit of an experiment. It is essentially an end-grain cutting board with a wood block print carved into it. The customer (and this guy!) couldn't be happier with how it turned out. It's made from walnut, hickory, and one thin piece of red cedar.
