First Responder Wellness Week Never heard of it. Honestly, first responders see and hear a lot of horrific things that people really shouldn't. What do we do with that emotional baggage? Bury it deep down of course. Those times, they are a changing... We take wellness seriously here at APD. We have to. There are challenges that stem from repeated exposure to high-stress situations, trauma, and the pressures of upholding public safety under intense scrutiny. We are determined to break down the cultural stigma and normalize conversations about anxiety, depression and trauma.
What do we do? -We have frequent trainings on nutrition, sleeping better, being a good partner, finances, self-care, yoga classes and more! -We have Bentley, the wellness dog. Not only does he break the ice at community events, but he also calms victims in times of need as well as officers after a tough call and a long day. There is just something about petting a big goofy dog that loves everyone all of the time. -We have a great gym at the station and can work out on duty. -We have alpha-stim machines -We have an incredible TRUST team -We all have Fridays off in the summer! Ok, just kidding about that last one but prioritizing wellness for our employees and their families is a big deal around here. So, happy Wellness Week! Take care of yourself. You matter.
P.S. Not just first responders, but everyone who made it to the end of this post... In case you haven't been told lately...You are important. You are loved. You are enough.

Working Dogs Oregon is .. with multcoso and vca in Oregon These two brave pups did something amazing today! They went to the @vca blood bank in Clackamas Oregon and were blood typed to see if they have a blood type needed! They earned these bandanas they are wearing indicating the lifesaver task they have signed up for! There is an ongoing and tremendous need for blood not only for humans but also for their canine companions. Just like people, dogs get injured, need surgery, and have life threatening illnesses; just like people, dogs need a safe and reliable source of blood in times of crisis. VCA NWVS Critical Care Blood Bank was established in 2006 to provide the highest quality veterinary blood products for the Portland-Vancouver Metro region. Over the past decade, the donations of the lifesaving canine heroes of this blood bank has produced over 8,000 blood components to help the critically ill and injured dogs of Portland.
It is difficult to keep blood in stock and available for emergency situations, such as dogs who have been hit by a car, or for pets who are undergoing lifesaving cancer or surgical procedures. A blood transfusion is the gift of life to these animals and this blood bank is always on the lookout for canine volunteers to donate blood. Enter Brooke and Mick. Serenity Sam willbe Working Dogs Oregon's first alcohol and drug treatment center dog. In about one month Sam will be headed to the Central Willamette Valley to join the staff at a 110 bed treatment center. When patients are looking for every reason to leave treatment, our hope is Serenity Sam will give them a reason to stay! Just like with our law enforcement dogs, we never divulge the agency until those receiving the dog announce it first. We will make that announcement when the time is right. Just know that Sam will be a difference maker in a place filled with my own heroes of the community. This staff saves lives everyday! More than that, they save families! We are so excited to be a part of this incredible program!
