Thanks to the MBA Library for the reminder that yesterday was World Algae Day!

These specimens of algae were collected in Plymouth and pressed in an album by Russel Harris in c late 1800s or early 1900s. Their vibrant colours last to the present day!

It’s #worldalgaeday and my most favourite of algae is the diatoms! Single-celled and microscopic, these algae are so important, storing carbon, making oxygen, cycling nutrients, providing food, and even helping innovations in science and medicine! #marineplankton 🦑

It's #WorldAlgaeDay! Japanese algologist Kintaro Okamura (1867-1935) provided taxonomies & descriptions in English & Japanese for his monumental work "Nihon sorui zufu" / "Icones of Japanese Algae" (1907-1942). Find it in #BHLib via

It’s #WorldAlgaeDay! What better day to celebrate the work of Irish phycologist William Henry Harvey. These images are drawn from the first volume of Harvey’s “Phycologia Australica”. To compile his works, Harvey travelled the world collecting specimens.

Apparently it is #WorldAlgaeDay so a good excuse to acknowledge the hardy unicellular #algae that grow to such densities in sea ice that they turn the ice brown. Sea ice algae have dominated my working days since 1991 and taken me to some amazing places

Celebrating today

It is #WorldAlgaeDay

Glad that both macro- & micro-#algae, in warm and cold climes, have dominated my (working) life since 1980s

Diatoms, a group of microscopic algae, can grow so well at freezing temperatures in #Arctic and Antarctic sea ice that they can turn it brown
