In praise of saltmarshes - teaming with life, storers of carbon and just awesome to look at. It’s #worldsaltmarshday here’s an aerial view of#Newportwetlands at Goldcliff. What amazing habitats to have right on our door step in Newport.
It’s #30DaysWild and your reminder to get outside, be curious and see what you can discover! Follow along with me to see what I spot in June!
Today is #WorldSaltmarshDay, let's celebrate this important coastal habitat.

It's World Saltmarsh Day! 🌿 The Severn Estuary has the largest saltmarsh in the South West. Saltmarshes capture carbon 40x faster than forests, protect against floods, and support incredible wildlife! #WorldSaltmarshDay #SevernEstuary
The State of the World’s Saltmarshes, published by @wwf.org.uk, Sky, UKCEH and @bluemarinef.bsky.social points out that saltmarsh habitat restoration could deliver important benefits for climate change and flood mitigation.

Unfortunately, they have long been neglected, but there is hope

It's the first ever World Saltmarsh Day, celebrating these vital coastal habitats!
But saltmarshes are disappearing three times faster than forests, threatening global progress on climate change goals, a major global report reveals.

Happy #WorldSaltmarshDay! 🌊🌾🥳
Salt marshes are an important habitat for plants & animals and also help protect the climate and the coast!
I loved salt marshes since my first project in 2008 💙. Now I'm responsible for the management of +8400ha in the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park.

For Carbon sequestration & flood defence #saltmarshes are "doing heavy lifting with little recognition." I would add that their immense value for #wildlife is often even less appreciated.
