From the First Read-Aloud to the Waiting Game On August 5, I did something that made my heart race: I read the first chapter of The Forgotten Bruja aloud in my writing group for the very first time. I’ve read my own work before, silently, to myself. But reading to a group—hearing my words fill the air, watching other people react in real time—is a completely different experience. It’s like standing on stage with no costume, no props, no music—just you and your words.

On August 5, I read the first chapter of The Forgotten Bruja aloud for the first time. Four days later, I was waiting for line edits on The Ordinary Bruja. Both moments had me holding my breath. One gave instant feedback, the other is a slow, nerve-wracking wait.
