“Banana Pics” and the mysteries of teen slang Today it was announced that Josh Brookes would be kicked off the TV talent show X Factor, after encouraging his fans in an unofficial chat to send him naked photos of themselves. What caught my eye was this part of the story (from the Herald Sun): The 20-year-old labourer was hosting an unauthorised live chat with another hopeful [competitor in the X Factor], Adil Memon, when they allegedly asked fans to “send us banana pics”. It is understood the phrase is teen talk meaning naked images. I have never heard this term before. It’s also something that is probably not that safe to do any googling research on. The instant assumption is that ‘banana pics’ refer to, erm, analogous male appendages, but I feel that if they were only asking asking men to send naked pics then the news papers would have made a pretty big deal out of it. Have you heard this term before? Do you have teenagers you can quiz about it? It turns out it was an X factor the show didn’t want. [Update: the truth is a lot more underwhelming that I could have hoped for. It appears that the offending Twitcam live chat happened on the 16th of September. A few days before that it appears there were some photos of a girl posing with a banana. Fortunately no one on Twitter gave more details than that, but I’m sure we all get the idea. A search for 'banana pics’ doesn’t go back earlier than the 14th. Looks like this fiasco is going to give a lot of traction to a phrase that would have otherwise been very short lived.]

Full story on the phrase 'banana pics' is actually more underwhelming than I'd imagined. See update: www.superlinguo.com/post/31949756644/banana-... (L) #Xfactorau
