To say that I was floored by the response to this year’s Rarepair Week would be a huge understatement. Between the migration to Bluesky and the general state of burnout so many of us are trying to operate under, I wasn’t sure how this was going to go, but I eagerly counted down the days nonetheless. Instead, you surpassed my wildest dreams and showed up for yourselves and each other in abundance. The tags are full of incredible drawings and gposes, and the AO3 collection for this year’s event has more than doubled from last year’s—and that’s not even counting that some of them were multi-chapter works and that not everyone chose to add their fics to the collection! Whether you did one prompt of all of them, if every week is Rarepair Week for you or if you used this as an opportunity to explore some new ships (or both!), I’m so grateful that you put a piece of your heart out for others to find and enjoy. Being able to play a small part in fostering community among fans of NPCs who get less of the spotlight is my sincere honor and pleasure, and I’m so privileged to play in this sandbox with you. It is a scene Granson was certain would never arrive, yet here and now, it has. Orion is knelt before him, panting out in weakened breath as his skin grows paler by the second. Sun beats down on them both, light again poured out into it yet there is no warmth on his shoulders. There is only a cold, sinking feeling and a churn of nausea he can barely keep down in his stomach. The promise rings out in his ears, heavy and resounding like a gong beat over and over: You leave this world yourself, Rho. You leave me as you. That is what he told him, back on a night where Orion had felt weaker than usual and fear had managed to claw its way into his mind. He crawled into Granson's lap, forehead to his and pleaded quietly for that promise to be made. No one would tell him the truth and mean it, not like Granson did. Here and now, Granson wished he too was incapable of such a thing, but he wasn't. He had done it once before and the last thing Orion wanted was to make him do it again. Fate, as Orion liked to cite, was a cruel mistress to them both but even she could not devise the wickedness that was set before him.
