As a follow-up, while those showcases are silly, I gotta admit, I'm liking #Hyprland as a Wayland compositor. I deeply missed #Xmonad when I made the jump to Wayland (mainly for hidpi/fractional scaling on my Framework 13) and Hyprland lets me do all the things I did with Xwayland, but often […]

Also selbst schreiben? Gibt es […]

Something went wrong with my Xmonad rebuild, with sinister messages about "illegal instruction". I do not want to dive into fixing that. So I spent some time today reviving my old Fvwm setup, making it behave like my Xmonad setup. It's rather amazing how I keep on coming back around to Fvwm […]

Switching from xmonad to i3 Now I've stopped teaching functional programming, I no longer need Haskell on my Linux desktop, _except_ that I use it to run xmonad. I've played around with i3 as an alternative tiling window manager in the past and, for some reason I can't now remember, it didn't seem as usable as xmonad. I'm now keen to switch away from xmonad for three reasons: 1. Haskell regularly needs updating as part of keeping the system up to date. 2. Whenever some Haskell library gets updated, I have to remember to recompile xmonad, just in case. 3. I suspect Haskell consumes quite a bit of space on my hard drive, which is now 93% full. ## “What” vs “how” One philosophical reason for preferring xmonad to i3 was that it seemed cool to implement a tiling window manager as a Haskell monad. However, this is simply implementation detail. I shouldn't really care about _how_ a tiling window manager is implemented provided it does _what_ I need. ## Future-proofing It seems that the i3 community is a bit more active than the xmonad community. Also, there appear to be i3-compatible tiling window managers, such as Sway, which support Wayland if X ever goes away (admittedly unlikely). ## Kicking the tyres I switched to i3 for a trial period to see how I get along with it. After an hour or so of active use, I'm pretty happy with it. I think I'll give it a few more days to “bed in” and make sure that I'm comfortable switching before I delete xmonad and Haskell and, hopefully, reclaim quite a bit of disk space. ## i3 configuration My i3 configuration is currently on an i3 branch of my dotfiles repository: * ~/.i3/config * /etc/i3status.conf #xmonad #i3 * * * Feedback: email me. ## Comments (privacy) [ ∪ | about | 🧻 | contact | 📖 | now | 🔍 | subscribe | © ]

Trying out #xmonad instead of #swaywm (which means reverting to x11 from wayland). Don’t have anything against wayland but I miss the variety of window managers — I used xmonad for years (probably 2007–12) and I find I still prefer its tiling model to sway/i3’s.

Still some issues to sort out with

I've been annoyed by Dropbox notifications about AppIndicator support last days. Found an elegant solution: snixembed, it works like a proxy. Compile, run, and everything works like a charm. I so love such solutions that don't require changing the whole thing. The beauty of modularity

"Lock my screen? Hoho, oh no I don't do that. I just use Xmonad with custom keybindings and when I walk away, I switch to an empty workspace."

Funciona bastante mejor. :-D

So I’ve decided to go down the rabbit hole and set up my Xmonad environment again. I’ll be tweaking it to adapt it to my art production workflow.

(The screenshot is an old setup. I’ll try to get it to look like this again)

A lot of minor differences make it hard to migrate from xmonad to i3... May try again to fix my issue with xmonad (more an xmobarr issue than xmonad) #i3 #xmonad

If you’re having trouble with xmonad on Ubuntu 14.04, try to install gnome-panel which brings back gnome-settings-daemon #xmonad #ubuntu
