15 Years On: How The ACA Shaped Reproductive Care Access With increasing threats to Medicaid and abortion care access, we asked policy experts how Obamacare has impacted Black women.

15 years ago, the ACA became law—expanding coverage, lowering costs & improving reproductive health, especially for Black women. Now, Medicaid cuts threaten these gains. “Protecting Medicaid & the ACA is essential,” says NHeLP’s Jasmine Young. #ProtectMedicaid #ACA15 wordinblack.com/2025/03/15-y...

In 2025 alone, more Washingtonians than ever before got health insurance made possible by the ACA. Now is not the time to roll back health care access.

We must protect and defend affordable health care in this Washington and across the country.

This week, we're celebrating the Affordable Care Act's birthday as it turns 15 years old! In Washington state, the ACA enables health coverage to more than 800,000 people.

White background with dark blue text: The ACA allowed me to retire at age 60, with good medical insurance, instead of having to stay in a job I was ready to leave, and wait until age 65 and begin Medicare. There were income limitations, but it was well worth the exchange for employment freedom.

Many are forced to work simply because they need access to affordable health care. The freedom to leave a job is important. And, many can relate to Tom's story.

15 years ago, Obama signed the ACA—millions covered, lives saved, families protected. Yet, some still want to tear it down. Healthcare is a right, not a privilege. Let’s defend it, expand it, and make sure no one is left behind. #ACA15 #HealthCareForAll #SaveTheACA

15 years ago, Obama signed the ACA—progress, but not perfection. Millions gained coverage yet many still struggle.
If we truly want to honor his legacy we must go further with Medicare for All.
And if Trump wants to rip healthcare away again?
Good luck selling that in 2024

White background with dark blue text: The Affordable Care Act (ACA) isn’t just policy—it’s personal. It’s the reason I’m still here today. When I was hospitalized with COVID for three months, the ACA ensured I had access to the life-saving care I needed. Without it, I don’t know how I would have made it through such a harrowing experience. The cost of intensive treatment, extended hospital stays, and follow-up care could have been financially devastating. But because of the ACA, I didn’t have to choose between my health and my future.

Like, Maria's story, the Affordable Care Act is personal for so many Iowans. It is why they are here today.

Members of Congress and legislative leaders should be looking at ways to strengthen affordable care systems, not dismantle them.

White image with dark blue text: As a single parent, my children faced several years of being under the ACA for care. The job I worked didn’t pay well enough to afford the company’s insurance that was offered, and I was thankful that we could wave it and be covered at a more reasonable price. My income was just slightly above the cut off for Medicaid. For three years I teetered between Medicaid and the ACA. The ACA allowed my children the security of care which otherwise they would not have had.

Many single moms like Debra are caught in the gap—making too much to qualify for Medicaid but still struggling to afford health insurance. Thanks to the ACA and expanded tax credits, people are getting the care they need.
We won't allow Republicans in Congress to take us backward!

The ACA has improved health coverage for women! Before the ACA, women could even be charged more than men for the exact same coverage. Now, insurers are required to cover maternity care, preventive care, and breastfeeding supplies. We must protect the gains we've made! #ACA15 #ProtectOurCare

Light blue image with dark blue text: I have a chronic health condition that will require treatment my entire life. Prior to the ACA, it was impossible for me to get health insurance. My employer didn't offer it, and if I tried to buy it privately I couldn't afford it or would be denied due to my pre-existing condition. I couldn't afford to pay for medical care out of pocket either, and eventually accumulated a large amount of medical debt after a serious illness. I was literally wasting away from a completely treatable condition.

Many Iowans, like Erienne, have pre-existing conditions. Thanks to the ACA we can't be denied coverage & people are getting the care they need. But Republicans in Congress want to take us backward. We can’t let that happen. We must make healthcare more accessible and affordable for all. #ACA #ACA15

White with blue image with the following text: It wasn’t until the Affordable Care Act passed that I was able to purchase insurance again. I used the “opportunity” to go back to school. I received my Associate of Nursing Degree and have been working as an RN ever since. The irony of my story was I was privileged enough to have the money to buy insurance. But our government was allowing insurance companies to legally discriminate against people who were sick.

Many remember what it was like before the #ACA when insurance companies could discriminate due to pre-existing conditions. And women would be denied coverage simply because of their gender.

Trump is once again attacking the ACA, and our representatives remain silent. That’s why on the 15th anniversary of the ACA, we’re demanding our lawmakers take a stand & oppose cuts to our health care. #ACA15

Image with text: I stayed in a job that was so stressful that I was losing my health. It controlled my life, but I could not leave. Any new insurance would not cover pre-existing conditions.
The funny thing is that because I had developed health conditions with my job, I could not leave it.

We heard a certain former president launched his Bluesky account sharing ACA stories from across the country and we were proud to see an Iowan, Lori, featured.
We'd like to share a few more #ACA stories about how Iowans benefitted from the ACA.
Here's Charmayne's story.
