The image shows a snow-covered trail with conifers and a few hardwoods, including Yellow Birch. I took this photo this morning after a latest spring snowstorm, which added a dusting of snow. The main mammals we get (based on trail camera sightings) include Red Fox, Gray Fox, Coyotes, and Red Squirrels. Birds that breed every summer on the property include Magnolia Warbler, Swainson’s Thrush, Hermit Thrush, Winter Wren, Blackburnian Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, and Ovenbird.

This is a scenic photo of some red and orange fall foliage reflected in Heart Lake in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. The Heart Lake Trail is one of the best places in the Adirondacks to learn about nature in the mountains. It provides both beautiful views of a pristine mountain lake and access to varied habitats. Much of the trail follows the lake shore and passes through mixed forest, with some marshy areas close to the shore, where marsh-dwelling plants such as Labrador Tea and Sheep Laurel may be found. The lake is also a good place to look for Common Loons and Great Blue Herons.

The image shows a large tree standing on the edge of a meadow. I took this photograph in September on the Sugar Maple Trail. This trail is part of the Heaven Hill trail system, owned and maintained by the Uihlein Foundation. The Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) is a large, slow-growing, deciduous tree which flourishes in well-drained soil in the Adirondack Mountains. Like other maples, Sugar Maples have opposite, lobed leaves. These leaves turn red, yellow, or orange in autumn, contributing to the brilliant palette of colors seen in September and early October in the Adirondacks.

As the name implies, the dominant tree in this kind of forest is the Northern White Cedar. Characteristic wildflowers found on hummocks in Northern White Cedar Swamps include Goldthread, Starflower, Bunchberry, Canada Mayflower, Clintonia, Creeping Snowberry, and Partridgeberry. In the hollows between hummocks, you might find Cinnamon Fern and Royal Fern. Characteristic birds in Northern White Cedar Swamps include Northern Waterthrush, Winter Wren, White-throated Sparrow, and Golden-crowned Kinglet.
