A trend of massive wildfires in the western US lofting smoke into the upper atmosphere is set to worsen as fires grow bigger. But the consequences of more smoke injected into the stratosphere remain uncertain. My story from an alarming session on pyrocumulonimbus clouds at #AGU2024:

Snow days set to disappear across much of the US By the end of the century, the eastern and southern US may never see deep snow cover the ground, with consequences for water storage as well as for the life on and beneath the snow

Under a very high emissions scenario, days with deep snow may disappear across the US except high mountains by the end of the century.
