Tempest on Sea at Night, Ivan Aivazovsky (1849): The artwork portrays a dramatic seascape illuminated by the ethereal light of the moon, breaking through tumultuous clouds. The scene captures a solitary ship battling ferocious waves in the midst of a stormy night, epitomizing the sublime power of nature and the perilous condition faced by sailors. The luminous reflections on the water and the dynamic depiction of the tempestuous sky evoke a profound sense of both awe and vulnerability. Ivan Aivazovsky’s masterful technique beautifully conveys the raw energy and atmospheric intensity of the sea at night, making this piece a timeless representation of human endeavor against nature’s immense forces.

Battle of Navarino, Ivan Aivazovsky (1846): The artwork illustrates a dramatic naval battle scene with a tumultuous sky above and a fierce engagement occurring in the waters below. Dominated by a palette of somber tones interspersed with bright explosions, the painting captures the chaos and intensity of the maritime conflict. Ships, both burning and intact, are depicted amid billowing smoke and turbulent waters, while figures in boats navigate through the surrounding debris. The artist’s adept use of light and shadow enhances the dramatic effect, emphasizing the violent and dynamic nature of the battle.

View of Constantinople and the Bosporus, Ivan Aivazovsky (1856): The artwork eminently illustrates a serene yet bustling harbor at dawn or dusk, with sailing ships and boats scattered across the calm waters of the Bosporus. Along the shoreline, one can observe a variety of architectural structures, including a mosque with its towering minarets, indicating the city’s rich cultural heritage. The soft, warm light from the horizon bathes the scene, enhancing the romantic aura of the cityscape. On the docks, various figures are depicted engaged in their daily activities, adding life and movement to the piece. The meticulous attention to detail and the harmonious interplay of light and shadow exemplify Aivazovsky’s mastery in capturing the beauty and vibrancy of Constantinople in the Romanticism style.

Istanbul; The Golden Horn in the moonlight, Ivan Aivazovsky (1868): A tranquil night scene features a glowing full moon casting a shimmering path on calm waters, where several ships are anchored near a cityscape. The dark silhouettes of the ships and city contrast beautifully against the warm glow of the moonlight.

Via the great Youtube channel ArtDeco I just discovered the paintings of Ivan #Aivazovsky, a Crimean painter. His marine art is beautiful. #art

Today, as part of #SundayArtist, let’s take a look at one of the most iconic marine painters — Ivan Aivazovsky (baptized as Hovhannes Aivazian).

The true hero of his paintings are the sea itself.

"Storm over the Black Sea," 1893.
Aivazovsky's technique and imagination in depicting the shimmering play of light on the waves and seafoam is widely admired, and gives his seascapes a romantic yet realistic quality that echoes the work of English watercolorist J. M. W. Turner.

Especially effective is his ability to depict diffuse sunlight and moonlight, sometimes coming from behind clouds, sometimes coming through a fog, with almost transparent layers of paint.

In this painting, roughly 10+ sailors huddle in a wooden rowboat, attempting to paddle the way back to their ship which is anchored much further out at sea.

Storm clouds hang heavy overhead. The water around them is in various shades of teal, cyan blue, turquoise, navy, and mint green. The water close to the boat is clearly violently turbulent bc its caps are frothing with white foam, no doubt from the sea's string under currents.

6/?. As a kid, I read many of the classics about adventures at sea, pirates, shipwrecks, & the like.

This #seascape conjures up those tales for me. Remember #Narnia's Prince Caspian where the cyan blue ocean tasted like sugar water?

No, thank you for appreciating them. It's truly MY pleasure as well because I've been on a quest to convert people into #Aivazovsky fans for roughly 5 yrs now.

Do you know, I've been raving about his work to *you* on 3 different sites now, Linda. Rofl. I was thinking of that yesterday. 3 together!

From Artchive.com: "The artwork vividly captures a dramatic nocturnal naval battle, with elements of intense fire and tumultuous sea. Dominating the scene is a fierce conflagration that engulfs the ships, casting a bright, almost blinding light against the dark expanse of the night sky. The tumult of battle is evident, with ships in varying states of destruction and smaller vessels hastily maneuvering in the foreground. The moon, partially obscured by clouds, casts a pale light that contrasts sharply with the fiery blaze, adding to the chaotic and haunting atmosphere of the scene. The highly detailed depiction of the ships, the dynamic use of light and shadow, and the emotional intensity make this painting a quintessential example of Aivazovsky’s mastery and the Romanticism movement’s emphasis on drama and emotion."

5/. I recall the first time I ever saw "Battle of Cesme at Night" (1848): my mouth was literally agape.

Couldn't believe the lighting, or how well he transported me to this great maritime battle bw Ru & the Ottoman empire. #EastCoastKin #Art #Painting #Seascapes #romanticism #Aivazovsky #Fire 🎨🌊

Tempest, Ivan Aivazovsky (1855).

A stormy night barely cut through by midnight is the context for this photo of a ship crashed and wrecked on rocky shoals. It's half on fire, the red flames filling the right hand side of the screen with a red gold orange light. The left side of the screen has colours of blue in an ombré effect where the navy and black sky hits the horizon; the water turns a lighter and lighter shade of blue so that, by the time it hits the shores, the frothy caps turn the dying waves a light blue-ish white.

Tiny specks on a rocky cliff overlooking a rough and stormy seas are actually people, attempting to save comrades and fellow sailors in a raft caught amidst powerful, white-capped waves & swirling ocean currents. The waves are so high and white capped that a line tossed by survivors on the cliff are barely visible at times, swallowed up by the white caps. The water is a shade of pistachio green. The raft is beige wood logs tied together with dark brown-red rope.

A dreamy, romantic painting of Venice at night under a mauve and soft blue sky filled with clouds and struck through by silvery gold moonlight. The clouds part to send beams of gold light onto the darkened Venetian buildings below and one gondolier. He is navigating a small skiff boat at the bottom of the frame. The water that isn't hit by the light is dark. In the distance, four large ships with large sails and masts are anchored in the bay over which Venice's cathedral looms.

2/?. "Bryon in Venice," (left), so dreamy.

"Sea View," 1867, (right).

Intense atmosphere & moods fill his works, whether gothic, drama, action, or romantic. The light contrasts (the chiaroscuro effect) help achieve his point. #EastCoastKin #Art #Painting #Seascapes

Aivozovsky did a number of similarly named paintings entitled Shipwreck or some variation thereof. When you click on this one, you see and practically feel a wrecked boat being pulled by turbulent water undercurrents and waves, all a frothy colour of cyan blue, teal, or mint green. The waves have even tilted over a buoy shown in the distance near where the angry, stormy navy sky hits the water. They're pushing the shipwreck against the rocky cliffs at the right edge of the painting, looking up forbidding. It looks like perhaps there's a man on top trying to send down a rope?

1/? - Some of you may recall my love for Ivan #Aivazovsky, the 19th-C painter who many consider to be THE greatest maritime artist ever. His #seascapes capture turbulent waves in motion like no other; his use of light blows my mind.

An #Art appreciation thread of some favs. 🎨🌊

Jesus Walks on Water, by Ivan Aivozovsky.
I like that this treats the character of Jesus as an eerie, supernatural being rather than a placid bearded fellow. Creepy even.
