🌏 Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata) The male Mandarin Duck is strikingly colourful, with a red bill, white eye-stripe, reddish "whiskers", a purple breast with white bars, ruddy flanks, and distinctive orange "sails" on its back. Females are more subdued, greyish-brown with a white eye-ring. Native to East Asia, established feral populations exist in the UK and parts of Europe, stemming from escaped captive birds. They prefer wooded ponds and rivers. Mandarin Ducks are generally shy, perching in trees, and often form small flocks. They nest in tree cavities. A colourful Mandarin Duck, photographed in the water from the side. Its beautiful colours really stand out against the dark water. Orange, gold, green, black, white, red and purple. His red-orange beak is open because he's calling out for company.
Since about two days, we have a somewhat uncommon visitor in our pond. Normally, it's just some #Mallards and #CommonMoorhens, but the day before yesterday, the pond got colourful with this beautiful #Mandarin.
