This captivating 1883 portrait is one of many painted in Paris by Finnish artist Edelfelt with one if his favorite models, who reportedly became his mistress, Virginie siting in his studio with a Japanese screen as background. Edelfelt enjoyed considerable success in the French capital, including a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exposition of 1889. He was one of the first Finnish artists to achieve international fame and painted portraits of many famous people, including Louis Pasteur, Aino Ackté, and the Russian imperial family. With stunning realism, the elegance and introspective mood of the Parisian bourgeoisie is captured along with Virginie’s smile and beauty. The languid pose and pensive expression is remarkable within a rich, emotive atmosphere.The woman, with her gently flushed cheeks and softly curled hair, relaxes in front a Japanese-style screen adorned with bamboo motifs, suggesting a fascination with exotic cultures during that era. Her gaze is distant and reflective, lending an air of melancholy and depth to the scene. Draped in a shawl with vibrant floral designs and detailed embroidery, she embodies both the sophistication and the fashionable aspects of her time. In the dimly lit background, a figure can be glimpsed by a doorway, adding to the narrative intrigue of the painting. The juxtaposition of the detailed, brightly lit foreground where Virginie sits, against the shadowy, less defined background, enhances the sense of personal isolation and introspective moment captured within the frame.
