This alligator was about 4.5 to 5 feet out of the water, so I think he was 6 or 7 feet long overall. Wikipedia tells me this is a fairly small specimen — average for adults is 13 feet long. Get a closer look to appreciate how colorful the gator is. His lower jaw and upper “lip” are surprisingly yellow. Also, take note of how blue his scales are — especially the deep blue on his legs. I never thought of gators as being blue. I also like his silver necklace. Some of the observed colors might also be influenced by today’s clear blue sky. We met in the Altamaha Wildlife Management Area, just south of Darien, Georgia. Hat tip to Wikipedia. As always, please consider making a donation to this invaluable resource.
While birding this morning, I encountered this handsome fella (did not ascertain gender). He was about 50 feet away from me. We both remained calm and he politely posed for photos.
