view along straight section of a rail trail under snow, lined by bare woods (but all trees have sticky snow on them), with track of a fat-tire bike stretching ahead, and two sets of hoof prints from horses that must have trotted along next to the bike??
view along canal-side trail, curving gently right off in the distance, with X-country ski tracks making parallel lines off into the distance. The canal water looks dark, cold.
view across wetlands, partly frozen over and covered with snow, next to canal trail, with snow dusted mixed woodland beyond. The trail in foreground shows quite a lot of foot traffic in the snow, but no other signs of activity in the scene.
view along other side of canal, a narrower, as yet untracked trail.
At least four fresh inches of the white stuff this morning, plus a wild wind -- srsly cold but ran anyway as the trails offer some shelter, & snowmobiles had gone through & reduced depth. Didn't take pics today, but here's a couple from a run a few w/ends ago, much nicer snow then!

late afternoon view of a snow covered trail (that I've just run down) curving up a slope into woodland -- it's all in shade, a bit gloomy, but the low sun is glinting in the treetops at right, and the sky visible through the trees is clear and still sunlit
view of same trail from same spot but looking ahead, down the slope to a small open area -- all snow covered -- and then curving right into some trees. The trees beyond the space are fully lit by the late sun, and my shadow is visible at lower right.
Another stretch of trail through deep snow winding down a slope through bare woods, which are mostly in bright sunshine.
one more pic from same trail as previous but looking up the hill, out into the woods to the left: lots of slender dark tree trunks and in the background a blue sky.
Still below freezing here, but two sunny days this weekend -- got out into the trails finally for a snow run yesterday. Deep enough that even after snowmobiles had passed through it was still hard work; maybe time to invest in some Yaktrax?

That was delightful! My run included some ice-skating this morning - not voluntarily.
When your weather app says "poor weather for running", take the advice!
Made it back, no broken bones. Need to thaw out now before I can write more than this post.

a clutch of large, mostly bright yellow softballs and smaller white(-ish) baseballs, nestled at the bottom of a pitching net on a bed of drab leaves. Some of the balls are not in very good condition, some look almost new. Not pictured: half a dozen golfballs (added just after I took the pic)
a rich harvest of sportsballs gathered from woodland skirting a nearby baseball field--collected while cooling down after doing some sprint intervals there yesterday (couldn't be bothered to drive to the high school track) Good seedstock for next season?

Before and after photos of my wife and I running 20 miles (in the bitter cold) as a part of training for our sixth marathon.

Autumn woodland scene in late afternoon sunlight: a narrow trails curls between trees and up a wooded bank
wetlands scene in the same woods: a pool stretches away into a little stream, as seen from a shaded bank. The trees across the water a bright with sunlight.
looking down into the pool, where a stand of pine trees is reflected so clearly that the water is a surprise
at the end of the run, close to day's end, a slightly broader stretch of trail, leaf-covered, and the woods are alight with the sun's golden hour glow.
Restorative time out on nearby trails on a mild Saturday afternoon, before starting in on the next batch of recommendation letters. (tis the season). The light on the leaves & water was glorious -- pics don't do it justice

My wife and I did our 15 mile #run yesterday. Last 2 miles was in the dark. Had to use our headlamps for the first time this season. #marathontraining #amrunning
Monson Memorial hall, a 19th cent. stone building with bell tower and a lawn before it, and a flagpole out front -- the US flag flutters in a gentle breeze against and almost cloudless blue sky. Portapotties at lower right are for the racers, some of whom can be seen waiting around for the off.
View from the arched-over stairs into the hall, looking out across the lawn to the street, to an ornate steepled church and some town buildings with a steep wooded hill right behind (Monson is generally pretty hilly!). Took this after I'd finished, but people are still coming in to the finish arch visible at lower left.
Close up view of part of the Memorial Hall's granite (?) stone frontage -- the autumn sunshine picks out the texture of the stone blocks in amazing detail.
On an almost impossibly perfect day for running, to Monson for this year's Memorial Classic Half. Well-organized, friendly folks, & the eats afterwards were top-notch, as ever. If you're in CT, western MA, or in nearby NY, & looking for a good 13miler, plan on it for next year!

Back of race t-shirt with text reading, "50th Mt Greylock Road Race: As high as you can get in Massachusetts, 3491'."
view of Veterans War Memorial Tower at summit of Mt Greylock -- a granite tower with viewing windows near the top. Picture is from a few years ago, as I didn't have my phone with me today.
No Mt Greylock Trail Race this year, so tried the road version, which is even simpler: just run up the road to the top. 183 of us got our runner's high that way today, and the views from the monument at the top were spectacular too. Now time to rest hard before semester opens on Tuesday!

50k monthly target, 52.26 miles achieved for July!
July v June comparisons. Marginally faster, but still slower than I'd desire, but keeping out there which is the main point.
The last 11 months I've achieved 50+ miles per month and will stick to that and push. Looking at breaking the 62+ miles, to score 100k
Whoop whoop! Made the target once again! 11 months on the trot, quite literally.

Audiobook cover of End of Story by Kylie Scott. Teal background with a woman with long brown hair, sunglasses, and dangling earrings
End of Story by @kyliescott.bsky.social has been in my Libby tagged section for probably over a year. Just started listening to it last night on my run. The audiobook narration is fantastic and I love how the mystery is set up in the first chapter. #AmListening #AmRunning #romancenovel #booksky
Monthly target 31.07 miles Achieved 52.18 miles

A much slower month, but managed to reach the target! Struggling in the heat and struggling to get up much earlier to avoid said heat!

view under a hazy sky out from rocky outcrop over wooded hills to a mountain like a cresting wave (Norwottuck). In the foreground on the rock is my waterbottle.
View between trees, later in same run, out across the woods and over patches of cultivated land to some buildings visible in the distance, before the hills begin again. At left, on a slender treee trunk a wooden sign reads, "Rattlesnake Knob 787'."
From the top of Mt Norwottuck looking back across the forested range towards the minor bump of Rattlesnake Knob and the larger rise of Long Mountain, from where I took the first picture. Hazy sky, green trees, and barely any signs of development.
It me! on top of Mt Norwottuck -- a selfie of an older man (white short beard & moustache, wearing glasses and a white baseball cap that shades his face) standing in the small clearing at the top, with a rocky outcrop behind and beyond that a view of the valley. The clearing is ringed with trees in good leaf.
It's been raining pretty much all day today, but yesterday felt just right to run the Holyoke Range #trails. After a mile or two, a great view of mighty Mt Norwottuck; later a look towards UMass from Rattlesnake Knob, then on through the Horse Caves & to the mountain top. Glorious!

view up a broad grassy trail bordered by forest with tire tracks leading into water then continuing on the other side (maybe 10' wide?). At right, part of a small beaver dam holds back the water that has spilled onto the trail.
narrow trail at water's edge, passing behind a pine tree that leans out towards the open water; trail is well trodden, but uneven, with roots, etc. Green leafage fills the distance.
from the trail in previous pic, a view out from under the same pine tree across the open water to woods on the other side. Lake/pond has lily leaves visible as well as other plant growth.
looking further down the narrow trail from same spot as previous two pics, with view of open water across to woods.
Yesterday's run on quiet trails in the Quabbin reserve -- checked in on a secluded beaver lodge to find they've added a side dam that has flooded one trail (it's also been VERY rainy here this spring). Most routes surprisingly passable though!

Monthly tracker from running app. Managed to run 60.41 miles in May!
Fuck yes! Slow this month, but managed to reach the 60mi pretty pleased with it! #AmRunning
M&M trail up over one of the rocky hilltops: a narrow trail winding among slender dark trees has worn through tattered leaf mulch. The mist is thick, with no view beyond the rock and trees at the peak.
A gloomy afternoon view of the top of Mt Norwottuck, looking from one side across a rocky outcrop through mist to barely visible trees maybe 50 yards away.
M&M trail at a much lower point in the range: broader mud+leaf path in more light, with bright green leafy growth on both sides, making the winding trail visible among the dark wet trees.
looking back from the same spot as previous: the trail passes between two trees (one with white M&M blaze and orange [?other] blaze) and heads off up the hill, again flanked by a bright growing carpet of spring leaves.
Yesterday's #trail outing was blessed by the rains of spring (not too soggy, fortunately): clouds surrounded the hilltops, but on the forest floor a bit lower down it was clear, and the spread of new growth made the path seem greenlit! Six days till Seven Sisters...
#AmRunning
view across a carpet of bare treetops to Mt Norwottuck's impressive bulk shouldering its way above the horizon line, under a cloud filled near sunset sky.
What a difference a day makes! Today was dry and breezy, and I ran the #trails from the other side, and stopped on the way to get this shot of Norwottuck from a view point on Long Mt (there was a young couple sitting on the rocky outcrop enjoying the view; it really must be spring!)
#AmRunning
snow-covered rocky space, with some bare trees, at top of Mt Norwottuck, with a Mt Holyoke Range (Mass DCR )signboard giving elevation 1106' and arrows to the Notch Visitor Center (1.2M) and Harris Mt Road (3.0M).
View from top looking out through misty haze over some fir trees to the valley below -- nothing much clear but a couple of snow covered fields.
From where I took the previous pic, but turning round and looking back over the snowy rocky outcrop at the top, surrounded byt bare trees, all in haze.
Back at my car after finishing the run: from inside the fenced parking lot off Bay Road, looking across a scrubby field up towards Mt Norwottuck, mostly cloaked in haze in the distance.
April snow brightened the cloudy day this morning, but it made the Mt Norwottuck #trails a special kind of tricky! Managed to stay upright, despite a couple of scary moments on the descent. Only three weeks till Seven Sisters--lots of work to do yet, ouf. がんばらんば🤜🤛

Running app badge, monthly target was 50 km and managed to do 58.59 miles!
Next month's target will be 60 mi! Pretty pleased with March. #AmRunning
