A high-contrast, textured photograph of a group of gulls resting on a dark mudflat at low tide. The image is characterized by a "gritty," etched aesthetic, where the dark, wet sand appears deeply structured, resembling a charcoal or graphite drawing. In the foreground and midground, the bright white bodies of the gulls create a sharp tonal contrast against the dark earth. Their forms cast vivid, elongated vertical reflections into the shallow, shimmering pools of water, creating a rhythmic pattern of light and shadow. The heavy use of definition and sharpness emphasizes the granular texture of the mud and the rippling surface of the water, transforming a natural scene into a stylized, monochromatic-leaning study of form and reflection.

An image of a marmot sitting up very alertly on a large granite boulder. Its mouth is open mid shout presumably warning others tucked away in the pile of rocks below the frame of nearby danger. In the background, deep green sub-alpine fir trees fill the frame.

In addition to ducks, geese and egret, our little urban lake also attracts other wildlife if you keep your eyes peeled. Whether you call them groundhogs, whistle-pigs, woodchuck, thick woods badgers or marmot; these burrowers are awake and active. 🐾📷

A tufted titmouse sits on a tree branch that slopes upward from left to right through the lower two-thirds of the image. The titmouse appears in profile at the center right in the image, and has a grey back, wings and crest, and off-white belly, with hints of reddish-brown under the wings. The titmouse and the branch its sitting on are fully in focus, as is another smaller branch below them both. Both above and below the titmouse numerous other out-of-focus branches can also be seen, as well as some beech leaves, giving rise to some nice bokeh in much of the scene. The remainder of the background is the greyish white of a cloudy day.

The butterfly's wings are spread in a "V" shape, displaying bright yellow panels with bold black stripes and blue and orange spots along the trailing edges of the hindwings. The background is a soft, lush green bokeh of leaves and other blossoms, and the image features a subtle vignette around the corners.

A square-format, bright photograph of an American Coot swimming in calm, blue water. The bird is shown in profile, highlighting its dark charcoal body, black head, and distinctive white bill with a small reddish-brown shield at the top. The water surface captures a clear reflection of the bird, and the background features thin, out-of-focus reeds reflecting in the ripples. The image is finished with a soft, high-key edit and a subtle vignette. Savannah, GA

A small mottled black and white bird with black legs stands in very shallow water on a beach at about a 45 degree angle to the right and facing the camera. Seen from a slightly overhead angle, this hen is a study in nature's artistry. Her body plumage is a rich tapestry of warm amber, golden-brown, and deep chocolate tones, each individual feather edged with dark brown or black, creating a striking scalloped, almost leopard-like spotted effect across her breast and flanks. The upper thoracic feathers display dense, rounded dark markings set against a warm tawny ground colour that genuinely evokes a big cat's rosettes. Her back and wing coverts fan out and lift away from the body, revealing layered flight feathers with bold buff-and-dark striping, caught at just the right moment mid-ruffle, as she shakes and reseats her plumage in that characteristic full-body shimmy ducks perform to realign their feathers and trap fresh insulating air beneath them. The head is compact and neatly streaked, with buff cheeks, a darker crown, and a characteristic dark eye-stripe framing her bright amber eye. Her bill is dark-tipped and orange-tinged, characteristic of the hen. Most eye-catching are her vivid orange webbed feet, standing out boldly against the grey-brown gravel, warm, saturated, and glowing in the low-angle sunlight that also highlights every individual feather's fine detail. Her posture, rounded, feathers lifted and slightly dishevelled mid-ruffle, captures a perfectly ordinary yet deeply satisfying moment of duck self-care, the avian equivalent of a good stretch after a swim.
