The theme today for #BirdOfTheDay is #BirdsOnTheGround. This Eurasian Jay was “anting” in my backyard in Denmark - allowing ants to crawl on him as a method of pest control. #EastCoastKin #birds #anting
#DidYouKnow: #Birds engage in a fascinating behavior called #Anting, where they rub insects, especially ants, on their feathers and skin.
The insects secrete chemicals like formic acid, which provides potential benefits for the birds' health.

The photograph is of a robin, spreading its wings and tail over an ant hill, allowing ants to crawl over it, leaving behind formic acid that will rid it of ectoparasites. The anthill lies under the wood chips seen covering the ground in the photo. In the background is a cement retaining wall which offers a degree of protection from predators like cats and opossums. Just out of sight is a second robin, possibly the mate of the one seen here. It has already had its ant bath, and was the one that drew my attention in the first place. Microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi can destroy a bird's feathers if their numbers get large enough. The formic acid produced by ants has been proven to destroy those microorganisms. This behaviour is not often seen because the birds are vulnerable to predators while they are in this position. Sadly, the picture is not as sharp as I would have liked because the bird was a distance away and my camera was only that of my iPhone
Hey Rockin Robin, It’s #Anting Time Tonight
This is the first time in my life that I have witnessed this behaviour. It is called passive anting, seen only in #Robins and #Ravens. See also alt text.
