MGM bought the remake rights to Patrick Hamilton'play with a clause that all existing prints of the #AntonWalbrook version be destroyed, even the negative, so it could not compete with their 1944 film. While unsuccessful in destroying all copies they did manage to suppress the 1940 film for decades.
