Review: ‘Doctor Aphra: Chaos Agent’ #5 Saves the Best for Last The fifth and final issue of _Doctor Aphra: Chaos Agent_ offers the strongest story of the whole miniseries, with Aphra on the trail of her half-sister Dellen. There were numerous ways this story could have fallen apart. Retroactively adding a significant family member to a character who has already received two long comic runs is a risky move, especially when her comics have focused on her relationship with her parents multiple times, but the story just about makes it work. Making it clear that Dellen was Aphra’s half-sister already puts a degree of separation between the two characters, and we learn that she was already out of Aphra’s life by the time we saw those flashbacks with her Dad in previous comics. This issue does enough work to make you believe that there is real history between the two half-sisters, with some smart flashback work. The story also benefits from not simply pairing Doctor Aphra up with one of the legacy _Star Wars_ heroes again. Whereas before it was easy to see this series’ remit was to have Aphra go on adventures with famous characters, this was the first issue that felt like an important Doctor Aphra story that really means something to the character. I wish we’d gotten more like this earlier. By the end, I found myself really looking forward to what the future has in store for these two characters. It took a while, but _Doctor Aphra: Chaos Agent_ has given us something worthwhile to add to the Aphra mythos. **Spoilers ahead…** CHERISH CHEN (W) • STEVEN CUMMINGS (A) Cover by EJIKURE Okay, so this issue does feature the final legacy character to complete its collection. Doctor Aphra has a conversation with Leia Organa and Meteora, with the former explaining just why they hired her sister to deactivate her tattoos. Fortunately, Leia’s appearance is a cameo and nothing more, and it serves the story very nicely. I enjoyed the subversion of the established trend in this miniseries by giving Aphra a gonk droid for a partner, rather than a new celebrity guest. Learning later on that it had been modified to ram people/doors at great speed was a fantastic reveal; it was fun seeing an initial damp squib of a partner turn out to be such a useful tool as it helped Aphra fight off a bounty hunter. I found the sole flashback between Chelli and Dellen really smart. Not only did it do some critical work to show these characters actually interacting with each other as children — we learn a lot about Dellen and her dynamic with her little half-sister — we see that Aphra took her lesson to heart. It makes you wonder what other tricks Aphra might have picked up from her, and if she’s already used some of them in previous issues. Dellen appears to be a little wiser than Chelli, though clearly not perfect herself. She’s distrustful, world-weary and cynical. Though she’s a more skilled slicer than Aphra and certainly less chaotic, she’s been alone and on the run for a long time. Her moral floor is a lot higher than Aphra’s it seems, but she also hasn’t gone on the same emotional journey that her little sister has been on for the last five years. It means that the sisters feel like equals in a way, as both are competent characters with their own flaws. They clearly care a lot about each other too. Both tries to keep the other sister safe from the bounty hunters and they work together to escape from them. It seems like things are good between them for what must be the first time in years. If the next _Doctor Aphra_ comic begins with the two of them together, surely we’ll learn a bit more about why they fell out in the first place and we’ll see that they still have a ways to go before they can fully repair their relationship, but the comic ends on a suitably hopeful note. I really hope that this dynamic continues to be explored when the next _Doctor Aphra_ run inevitably returns. _**Rating: 7/10**_ ##### Josh Atkins + posts Josh is a huge Star Wars fan, who has spent far too much time wondering if any Star Wars character could defeat Thanos with all the Infinity Stones. * Josh Atkins https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/josh-atkins __ 'Star Wars: Visions' Volume 3 Review: A Strong Addition to the Series * Josh Atkins https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/josh-atkins __ Sly Moore - 'Star Wars' Character Spotlight * Josh Atkins https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/josh-atkins __ Full Cast List with Character Descriptions Released for 'Star Wars: Visions Vol. 3' * Josh Atkins https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/josh-atkins __ Darth Vader Has a Force Vision in 'Master of Evil' Excerpt

Review: ‘Doctor Aphra: Chaos Agent’ Sends Aphra on a Fun Double Cross Heist with Han Solo The third issue of _Doctor Aphra: Chaos Agent_ delivered another entertaining story as our favorite archaeologist paired up with another legacy _Star Wars_ character in Han Solo. While the reasoning behind Han Solo’s appearance in this story feels a bit contrived, his banter with Aphra is predictably fun, but a lot less hostile than I expected. Being a former smuggler, it seems Han doesn’t hold any grudges against Aphra after their last meeting in the _Star Wars_ comics set after _A New Hope_ , and we see in this issue that they actually work quite well together when they’re on the same side. Speaking of great banter, Doctor Aphra is consistently hilarious throughout the issue. Whether it’s making remarks about her boss like a schoolchild murmuring about their teacher, sarcastic remarks predicting the outcome of an encounter or cracking on to an attractive female alien, Aphra constantly had me laughing. It’s the most consistently funny I remember her being for quite a while, but perhaps that’s just because the stakes became so high in her last couple of storylines. Doctor Aphra is always fun to read when the stakes are high, but she’s at her funniest when the stakes are relatively low. As you’d expect of a story pairing her up with Han Solo, there’s a few double crosses and twists to the mission, making for a really fun story. I didn’t expect this issue to be quite so good, but it left quite an impression. Here’s hoping writer Cherish Chen can keep it up. **Spoilers ahead…** CHERISH CHEN (W) • GABRIEL GUZMAN (A) • Cover by EJIKURE While I rolled my eyes as soon as Doctor Aphra said the word “nerfhearder”, knowing that Han Solo was about to enter the room, and I thought the jokes about the hyperdrive failing at the end of the issue were incredibly corny, the rest of the dialogue in this issue was fantastic. I was pleasantly surprised at just how hilarious Aphra was the whole way through. I particularly loved her going from criticizing the mission plan to shamelessly flirting with Lady Xiering without missing a beat, and later subtly pleading with Sabi Sabo to just carry on ignoring her to lessen the odds of him gobbling her up whole. Her banter with Han was always fun. I was expecting Han to be nowhere near as patient with her as Luke was, but instead we got a story where they pretty much had a competition going to see who was the smartest former criminal. Sure, Han clamped down on her a couple of times when she insinuated he’d lost touch with his roots, but otherwise it was a really fun pairing. Speaking of good pairings, I also enjoyed Aphra’s flirty banter with Lady Xiering. Right from the off, we got the sense that there was more to Xiering than just being a Campi noble as she seemed receptive to Aphra’s flirtations. By the end of the issue, I found myself hoping that these two get to meet each other again sometime soon. The hijinks they’d get into could be legendary. This kind of story needs a good villain and we got a good one in Sabi Sabo. His design is fantastically imposing, as a hulking brute with an eel’s head. While the narrative device of having the villain kill a henchman over something inconsequential to make a point is not exactly new, it was nevertheless effective as it rammed home what a potentially dangerous situation Aphra and Han had found themselves in. The _Indiana Jones_ inspiration is never far away with Doctor Aphra, but it was especially close this time as Han Solo deployed the ol’ switcheroo to send Xiering and Stingxi off with the fake totem after Aphra had already identified that Sabi Sabo was trying to swindle them with his own fake. Add in the twist that the two Campi were planning to abscond with the totem all along and you’ve got a twisty finale worthy of _Solo: A Star Wars Story_. I did think I was struggling to follow the reveals at one point, but thankfully Chen promptly explained what was happening via expository flashback panels before I became truly lost. I liked that Sabi Sabo ended up being a bit of a red herring. Though he did threaten to kill them at the end, Han reminded him that it would simply bring the might of the New Republic down upon him. The two Campi were the true villains and I do hope we see them again. They proved to be pretty fun adversaries, particularly Xiering. I was initially underwhelmed to learn that Doctor Aphra will be paired up with Chewbacca next, as she goes through the roster of legacy characters (presumably she’ll team up with Leia and Lando in future issues too), but admittedly having them go up against Black Krrsantan is a tasty enough prospect to keep my hopes alive for a fun follow-up to this fantastic issue. _**Rating: 8/10**_ ##### Josh Atkins + posts Josh is a huge Star Wars fan, who has spent far too much time wondering if any Star Wars character could defeat Thanos with all the Infinity Stones. * Josh Atkins https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/josh-atkins __ Review: 'Hyperspace Stories: Codebreaker' #3 Shows What Makes Poe Dameron a True Hero * Josh Atkins https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/josh-atkins __ Owen Lars - 'Star Wars' Character Spotlight * Josh Atkins https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/josh-atkins __ 'Star Wars' #4 Review: Best Issue Yet as Storylines Converge and Action Ramps Up * Josh Atkins https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/josh-atkins __ 'Star Wars' Chance Cubes Explained
