🛡️ #Roman Fort of #Arbeia - South Shields built c.129AD by Legio VI. Garrisoned by auxiliaries & developed as a major depot for Hadrian’s Wall. It supported incursions into Caledonia. UNESCO World Heritage site, includes a museum & reconstructions of the West Gate, barracks, HQ, and commander’s home.

Just been to the extraordinary Arbeia Roman remains.

Why isn't this better known?

A really excellent visit and well explained on site.
