An arctic fox moves carefully across dark, lichen-covered rocks. Its thick, fluffy fur is mostly white with faint gray shading, helping it blend into the cold tundra. The fox stays low to the ground, one paw lifted mid-step, alert dark eyes facing forward. Short, rounded ears and a pointed snout reflect adaptations to a harsh, quiet environment of moss, grasses, and stones.

Facts about the Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus)
Extreme cold survival: Can endure temperatures as low as −50 °C (−58 °F) due to dense fur, including on the soles of its feet.
Seasonal coat change: White in winter, brown or gray in summer for camouflage.
Compact body design: Short ears, legs, and muzzle reduce heat loss (Allen’s rule).
Food caching: Stores surplus food under snow or soil for lean periods.
Wide distribution: Found across Arctic regions of North America, Europe, and Asia.

Bergmann’s Rule: Proposed in 1847, it suggests larger body sizes in colder climates to conserve heat. While influential in ecology and evolutionary biology, modern research shows it applies inconsistently and serves mainly as a historical framework.

Allen’s Rule: Proposed in 1877, it explains why animals in cold climates tend to have smaller extremities, reducing heat loss as an evolutionary adaptation.

Another #ArcticFox. This one with a dirtier coat, but brutally cute. Who doesn’t want one?

#ArtAdventCalenday days 13,14,15 #SciArt cross over, sketches of chickens who I study to look at the the condition of keel bone fracture, which occurs very commonly in laying hens in husbandry (~80%). We are looking at the acute consequences to breathing, activity and the potential for pain @au.dk

A colour photograph of a man with a bicycle scene from the back, towards the right of the frame. He is facing away from the camera and looks like he has paused to take a phone call. He is in a small parking lot and in front of him is a wall painted a pale mauve for the upper 3/4 and a gray for the lower quarter.

A lucky shot I got on my first roll when I took up the film photography as an adult. The dopamine I got seeing this photograph sealed it as my new favourite hobby.

#ArtAdventCalenday Day 12-ish! (Yeah I’m still in deadline mode, so things are a bit random)

Here’s a random violet I sketched in the park on a random much warmer Spring afternoon!

#ArtAdventCalenday day 11 is from an inktober series I did a couple of years back where I used the prompt to inspire a poem and drawing (these were based on microbiology themes). Procreate on iPad. #SciArt
