This painting depicts the biblical story of Susanna and the Elders, a traditional reading for the 5th Monday of Lent. At the left, a dark haired white woman in a state of undress (as she prepares for her bath)sits on a stone bench. At the right, behind the back of the bench, are two fully clothed white men. The first man, in a red tunic, has a bald head and white mustache and beard. He raises his right hand to his lops in a gesture for silence. The other man has dark hair that is becoming scanty on top. The woman leans away from the two men; her left hand is raised as though to hold them off, and her right hand grips the edge of the bench as she leans back, away from them.
