Creating the North Atlantic’s largest MPA network: Interview with Azores President José Manuel Bolieiro José Manuel Bolieiro says he’s been an environmentalist for as long as he can remember. He recalls captivating encounters with marine life as a teenager while diving in the North Atlantic waters of his native São Miguel, one of the nine islands that make up the Portuguese-administered Azores archipelago. Picture shows a very common fruit tree in São Miguel: Limão galego (Rangpur lime), Citrus limonia 'Osbeck'. A naturally occurring hybrid of orange and lemon. An incredibly hardy and high-yielding citrus fruit. It looks like a mandarin, is as sour as a lemon and has the aroma of an orange.
In the 18th century, oranges were grown on a large scale in São Miguel, but this was abandoned in the 19th century due to the leaf miner moth. The Rangpur lime served as the rootstock for oranges. Although these are also attacked by the leaf miner moth, they produce new leaves so quickly that it does not affect them. Nowadays, you can see one or more of these trees in almost every garden. Their juice is ideal with fish. The juice, or even the whole fruit, freezes very well. And you can make one of the best English-style marmalades from it, as the peel is bitter (even if the locals never do it, because 'bitter' is obsolete in the Portuguese cuisine).

The viewer looks out over a well-trodden path, worn away by water erosion, which slopes gently downwards. Surrounding it are grasses, shrubs, heather and mosses. Further down, meadows, fields and groves of Japanese cedar can be seen. At the top of the picture lies the Atlantic Ocean.

@nhm-london.bsky.social has a life-size model of #BlueWhale - first saw when I was 8. Ever since, it’s been a dream to see 1, never thought I would. Y’day saw 2 off #Pico #Azores surfacing, breathing, diving in sync which is really rare, they’re usually solitary.

The picture shows the eastern plateau of the island of São Miguel, with its forests and pastures stretching all the way to the highest peaks in the background (approx. 25–30 km away). In the foreground are a few Cryptomeria japonica trees (Japanese cedar), which have evidently self-seeded. Lenticular clouds stretch across the blue sky from right to left (south-west to north-east), which is characteristic of a foehn weather situation. About three hours later, the spot from which the photo was taken was shrouded in thick clouds and pouring (warm) rain. As a former resident of the northern Alpine foothills, I am familiar with the Föhn and was astonished to find it here with such intensity on that day (I even had a slight headache in the morning). After all, the ridge is only about 800 m high, not 2–3,000 m as in the Alps.

The photograph shows, in the foreground and in the shade, a foxtail or swan’s neck agave with a fully developed inflorescence. The agave’s leaves are rather short and do not prick; the inflorescence is several metres long and forms an arch rising upwards. In the background, bathed in bright sunlight, lie the green and blue waters of the Atlantic and the cliffs. The villages of Achadinha and Achada, just a few kilometres away, can be seen. A traffic sign warns that the road down to the sea has a 25% gradient.

The viewer looks out over an almost circular pond which, protected by a narrow, low concrete wall, borders the Atlantic. A wave is just lapping over this small wall, which also has at least one barred opening below the waterline to allow the water in the pond to circulate. Behind the pond, you look out over a bay that ends on the right at the rocky cliffs of Capelas. Further back, you can see the flat section of the north coast with its many small volcanic cones stretching as far as Ponta do Cintrão. The sky is heavily overcast.
