While there is constantly ‘no money’ for education, climate protection and social security, billions are being poured into tanks, weapons and so-called infrastructure. At the same time, racism, social division and right-wing agitation are on the rise. Instead of offering real solutions to crises, the focus is on militarisation, border closures and exclusion. However, current political developments are not stopping at universities: social cuts and budget reductions are affecting us students directly – dilapidated buildings, overcrowded seminars, rising canteen prices and semester fees, less funding for research and teaching. Instead, billions are being poured into militarisation and rearmament, and our research is being conducted in the interests of militarisation. At the same time, we are experiencing increasing restrictions on our rights on campus: students who show solidarity with Palestine are criminalised, events are banned and employees are silenced. These repressive measures are intended to intimidate us – but we will not allow ourselves to be divided! Während für Bildung, Klimaschutz und soziale Absicherung ständig „kein Geld da“ ist, werden Milliarden in Panzer, Waffen und sogenannte Infrastruktur gesteckt. Gleichzeitig nehmen Rassismus, soziale Spaltung und rechte Hetze zu. Statt echte Lösungen für Krisen zu bieten, wird auf Militarisierung, Grenzabschottung und Ausgrenzung gesetzt. Die aktuellen politischen Entwicklungen machen jedoch auch vor den Hochschulen nicht Halt: Sozialabbau und Kürzungen treffen uns Studierende direkt – marode Gebäude, überfüllte Seminare, steigende Mensapreise und Semsterbeiträge, weniger Mittel für Forschung und Lehre. Stattdessen werden Milliarden in Militarisierung und Aufrüstung gesteckt und unsere Forschung im Sinne der Militarisierung geführt. Gleichzeitig erleben wir eine zunehmende Einschränkung von unseren Rechten auf dem Campus: Studierende, die sich solidarisch mit Palästina zeigen, werden kriminalisiert, Veranstaltungen verboten und Beschäftigte zum Schweigen gebracht. Diese Repressionen sollen uns einschüchtern – doch wir lassen uns nicht spalten! Join us for a discussion about the prison system as a tool of state control, organized by the Dismantle Damon campaign, together with other activists and groups. State authorities and defenders of the prison system often justify detention with the necessity of establishing a deterrent to crime or of separating offenders from their potential victims. In fact though, prisons strictly political or capitalistic. Depending on which country we look at, we see prisons used not only as cages for "enemies", but also as factories, employment boosters, population control tools, brainwash centers, or hubs for other kinds of human exploitation.

As a campaign which supports Palestinian women* prisoners, we want to talk about the topic of prison as a tool of control, and the deep-rooted reasons for it existence. We would like to look into how its use by the Israeli occupation compares to its use elsewhere. Most importantly, we would like to focus on how we can imagine a world without prisons, what this world could look like and how it could be achieved.

The event will start with a short introduction to set the ground, followed by a collective discussion with everyone present. As always, you will be able to write letters to Palestinian women* prisoners in the Damon prison, occupied Haifa. Also, you will find materials written by (ex-)prisoners and more information about Damon and the Palestinian prisoners movement.

Nehmen Sie an einer Diskussion über das Gefängnissystem als Instrument staatlicher Kontrolle teil, die von der Kampagne Dismantle Damon zusammen mit anderen Aktivisten und Gruppen organisiert wird. Staatliche Behörden und Befürworter des Strafvollzugs rechtfertigen die Inhaftierung häufig mit der Notwendigkeit, eine Abschreckung gegen Verbrechen zu schaffen oder Straftäter von ihren potenziellen Opfern zu trennen. Tatsächlich aber sind Gefängnisse rein politische oder kapitalistische Gründe.

Je nachdem, welches Land wir betrachten, werden Gefängnisse nicht nur als Käfige für „Feinde“, sondern auch als Fabriken, Arbeitsbeschaffungsmaßnahmen, Instrumente zur Bevölkerungskontrolle, Zentren für Gehirnwäsche oder als Drehscheiben für andere Arten der menschlichen Ausbeutung genutzt. Als eine Kampagne, die palästinensische Gefangene* unterstützt, wollen wir über das Thema Gefängnis als Kontrollinstrument und die tief verwurzelten Gründe für seine Existenz sprechen. Wir möchten untersuchen, wie die israelische Besatzung sie im Vergleich zu anderen Ländern einsetzt.

Vor allem aber möchten wir uns mit der Frage beschäftigen, wie wir uns eine Welt ohne Gefängnisse vorstellen können, wie diese Welt aussehen könnte und wie sie erreicht werden könnte. Die Veranstaltung beginnt mit einer kurzen Einführung, um den Boden zu bereiten, gefolgt von einer gemeinsamen Diskussion mit allen Anwesenden. Wie immer werden Sie die Möglichkeit haben, Briefe an palästinensische Gefangene* im Damon-Gefängnis im besetzten Haifa zu schreiben. Außerdem finden Sie Materialien, die von (ehemaligen) Gefangenen geschrieben wurden, sowie weitere Informationen über Damon und die palästinensische Gefangenenbewegung.
