In the photo is a vertical stalk of Mexican sage in robust fuzzy purple bloom with the occasional white flower. The hummingbird hovering on the left of the stalk - about half-way up - is sipping one of the white flowers. We see the bird's extended right wing, right eye, its grey-ish underside with slight orange tinges under its wing-pits. My friends at inaturalist.org have let me down on this one. We all know it's a hummingbird. But what KIND of a hummingbird? A female one? Probably. But what kind of female hummingbird is it? That was 11 years ago. We will likely never know. But it is quite pretty. And in focus.
