Silhouette of the tops of several trees with bare branches, in which are large ests. Some of the nests are occupied by herons, and the silhouettes of a few flying birds are visible in the upper half of the photo, against a moody grey sky background.
Great blue herons, nesting. A color photo that looks B&W.

Several great blue herons lined up along the edge of a large industrial dock. The heron closest to the viewer is in crisp focus, and the herons behind it get progressively blurrier. Most of them are facing in the same direction as the bird in front, looking out across the dock, which has a few large pipes running along its length. Taken at Ballard Locks.
A photo from today's walk. I sometimes get my ducks in a row, but this is the first time I've managed to get my herons in a row.

The herons are returning for nesting season! Rainy morning at Seattle’s largest Great Blue Heron colony in Commodore Park, near the Ballard Locks. This is an easy, accessible spot for birdwatching and one of our favorite places to visit.
