(askanews) - Una possibile risposta alla domanda su che cos'è e cosa rappresenta l'arte contemporanea: la mostra "Another day. Another night" che il Museo Guggenheim di Bilbao dedica a Barbara Kruger è anche questo, un'immersione, letterale, in uno spazio di senso che restituisce la dimensione fisica, intellettuale e politica di una pratica artistica cruciale che si sgancia dall'idea tradizionale di "opera", per farsi, nei fatti, mondo. Per "essere" come strumento che scava nel senso profondo dell'inafferrabile presente. "Ritengo che questa mostra - ha detto ad askanews la curatrice dell'esposizione, Lekha Hileman Waitoller - sia un intervento artistico totale, perché l'arte è ovunque, ma non necessariamente appesa alle pareti. Ci sono opere alle pareti, chi sono lavori enormi a pavimento, ci sono schermi giganti e schermi liberi. Ci sono opere sonore in tutto lo spazio espositivo. La cacofonia che si genera tra le cose da guardare, da attraversare, da ascoltare o che ci circondano è parte della sua strategia per portarci a pensare a questi messaggi che ci provengono da tutte le parti, e al modo in cui hanno effetti su di noi e danno forma a come comprendiamo il mondo". Nata nel 1945, Barbara Kruger da decenni utilizza lo stile della comunicazione di massa per creare lavori che lanciano messaggi - visivi, sonori o su scala monumentale - che indagano le strutture di potere e di controllo, le dinamiche persuasive e le limitazioni continue di libertà e diritti che caratterizzano la nostra vita in un'Occidente travolto dal consumismo e dal conformismo. L'arma di Kruger è il linguaggio, il suo strumento è l'appropriazione degli stilemi della pubblicità e il metodo è ribaltarne il senso, strappando il velo dell'ipocrisia, sia commerciale sia politica. I suoi motti, per esempio "I Shop therefore I Am", o "Your Body Is a Battleground", fotografano la realtà, e a Bilbao possono anche dialogare a distanza con i truismi di Jenny Holzer, che nel museo è da sempre molto presente. "Penso che la vera qualità del lavoro di Barbara Kruger - ha aggiunto Lekha Hileman - sia che identifica questi problemi con l'umanità, e che si tratta di problemi ricorrenti nel corso della storia, che non spariranno. Lei riesce a descriverli con frasi molto chiare e concise". In un certo senso c'è una chiarezza totale, ma, al contempo, tutto resta ambiguo, inafferrabile, distante come il vero potere e i veri persuasori. E le voci che sussurrano ovunque messaggi rassicuranti generano quasi più ansia delle denunce esplicite. Tutta la mostra al Guggenheim è una grande unica installazione, che coinvolge gli spazi espositivi del museo, che, se possibile, oggi si svelano ancora di più nella loro potenza, ma anche i pavimenti e utilizza il linguaggio, compresa la lingua basca, così importante per l'identità della regione, come un grimaldello per ogni certezza. Sfruttando anche brillantemente quegli strumenti digitali che sono una delle grandi infrastrutture del pensiero dominante - e spesso unico - del nostro mondo di oggi. Che qui finalmente possiamo guardare con occhi differenti.
