BEFORE WE DIE BeforeWeDie The Urgent Crisis of Supported Housing for People with Intellectual Disabilities in Ireland CAMPAIGN MISSION: EVERY SON AND DAUGHTER WITH AN INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY DESERVES THE FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT TO A SAFE, APPROPRIATE, SUPPORTED HOME BEFORE THEIR PARENTS ARE GONE. CURRENTLY, THE IRISH STATE RELIES HEAVILY ON A "CRISIS-MANAGEMENT MODEL. BASED ON A SURVEY OF 1000 FAMILIES CARRIED OUT BY BEFORE WE DIE IN MARCH 2026 SECTION 1: PLANNING THE VOID 78% HAVE NO FORMAL HOUSING PLAN 2% 20% ARE STUCK IN INFORMAL CONVERSATIONS THE 2% REALITY: A TOTAL LACK OF WRITTEN PLANS The vast majority of families surveyed have never had a long-term housing plan discussed by the HSE or disability services. Only 2% of people with intellectual disabilities have a formal, written housing plan in place for their future. One in five families has only had informal talks about housing. which offer no legal or structural security for the adult with ID. SECTION 2: THE AGING CARER CRISIS A SYSTEM SUSTAINED BY AGING PARENTS 48% OF PRIMARY CARERS ARE AGED 60 OR OLDER 92% OF ADULTS WITH AN INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY STILL RELY ON A PARENT AS THEIR PRIMARY CARER THE ADULT CHILD PROFILE THE MEDIAN AGE OF THE ADULT CHILD LIVING AT HOME IS 27 60 14% MEDIAN AGE AGED OF CARERS OVER 70 SECTION 3: THE HOUSING LIST TRAP 2% AGED OVER 80 With 60% of these individuals aged 25 or older: ONLY 19% ARE ON AN OFFICIAL SOCIAL HOUSING LIST Despite the urgent need, only a small fraction of adults with ID are registered on a social housing list in their own name. 40% HAVE WAITED OVER 4 YEARS 24% HAVE WAITED OVER 7 YEARS 12% HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS 4 YEARS+ 7 YEARS+ 10 YEARS+ THE HUMAN COST (VOICE OF CARERS) . www.beforewedie.ie
