1947 black-and-white photo depicting Dr. Vincent Ardiello administering the smallpox vaccine to circus performer Betty Broadbent (known as “The Tattooed Venus”) prior to her appearance at Madison Square Garden in New York, 1947

Ardiello, dressed in a white, short-sleeved shirt, a colorfully patterned necktie, and light, pinstriped dress slacks, is bowed forward to administer the injection in Ms. Broadbent’s upper thigh as she lifts her black silk stage dress to accommodate him. Her shapely legs are almost entirely covered in intricate tattoo designs, and she’s wearing black, short-heeled, “peep toe” Mary Jane shoes with light colored bobby socks. Her dark, wavy hair is cut short and clasped on top with a white, floral bow clip, and she’s gazing down at the injection site with a relaxed, confident smile on her face.

Standing to Broadbent’s immediate left are two unidentified women in wool suit jackets and calf-length skirt, smiling down at Broadbent’s injection.

Directly behind Dr. Ardiello is an old fashioned, free-standing white medicine cabinet with a glass door. Inside and on top of the cabinet sit a variety of different sized and shaped medicine bottles.
