Bucknell Field Botany class posing at sunset.

What troopers! W/ temps in the 20s & darkness setting in for 1/3 of the exam period, this #FieldBotany crew totally killed their on-campus plant ID exam. Of 150+ species we learned, they were responsible for 133… and got tested on 40. Proud of them for meeting the challenge! #bisonflowers 1/2

Last Field Botany trip of the semester: Dries Orchards, where we learned about how apples are grown, harvested, processed, and sold... and turned into both sweet and hard cider. #bisonflowers #iamabotanist

15 piles of mounted herbarium specimens

Some Field Botany final products: stacks of the 5 specimens each student chose to mount out of the 15 they each submitted for credit. I love the look of freshly mounted #herbarium specimens… and am stoked about adding these to
Bucknell’s Manning Herbarium collection.

Okay, gang. Are we ready for a little Bluesky #PlantsGiving action? A social media tradition since 2018: counting & reporting out the number of plant species consumed during your Thursday dinner. I've got a class doing it for homework. Excited to see what they share. #iamabotanist #bisonflowers

Field Botany surveying tree/shrub recruitment in gaps in an oak-hickory forest resulting from oak mortality caused by spongy moth infestations. Thanks to the Haussmann family for letting us tromp around in their woods.

Was a good week in Field Botany with a trek to Weiser State Forest’s Roaring Creek Tract. Dam repair = empty reservoir. Lots of coal country history to chat about here. 125 years ago there were almost no trees in this view to speak of. #resiliency #iamabotanist #bisonflowers

Field Botany '24 visit to the Bucknell campus farm. Met crop plants from families we've covered, ate some Solanum berries + some aggregates of drupelets, sniffed some antiherbivore biochemistry, hung with the three sisters. The uszh. #bisonflowers

First full field day in Field Botany took us to the banks of the West Branch #SusquehannaRiver. Too deep/fast to wade out this time, but plenty to see/learn in the riparian woodland (which was fully flooded only 2 weeks ago). #bisonflowers

Good first day of #FieldBotany ‘24. Keyed out Impatiens capensis as a group, learned some new botanical terms, then used those skillz to key out some trees in teams. It’s on.
