it's easy, nowadays, for people to say they always knew she was going to be a star. and hey, maybe they did. all I know is that none of them were there that night in the rink when I first laid eyes on her. I wasn't sure what she was going to be. but whatever it was, I wanted in on it too.
you might think you have a good idea of what it was like. from the footage, the competitions, the interviews. but being there by her side, head to head, blade to ice. the fear, the awe, the anticipation. god, the sheer joy of it. that's something that just doesn't translate to primetime tv.
you asked me if I'm bitter I never got to win gold against her. and I'll ask you. how could I be? of all that I have to be bitter about, I can never resent her for that. you were right about one thing. she is a star. I'm just lucky I got to stand in her light for a little while.
