The #BookerInternational short list is out. I understand The Taiwan Travelogue and Director selections. I expected them. I’m really sad Women Without Men and the Wax Child didn’t get the nod.
Anyone else working on some #BookerInternational short list predictions?
I would like to see:
1. The Wax Child
2. Women Without Men
3. She Who Remains
4. We are Green&Trembling
5. On Earth As Beneath
6. Taiwan Travelogue
Tho I suspect one will get bumped by the Director. I understand the hype.
Happy Monday!
I’m continuing my #BookerInternational quest. Hoping to finish The Wax Child today. It is an intense, visceral kind of read.
Book cover for Wax Child: a wooden rocking cradle emitting smoke all set upon a black background. Text set in upper left and upper right in tiny white type.
As I race the upcoming #BookerInternational short list announcement I’m diving into Olga Raven’s The Wax Child. I appreciate the craft in all I’ve read. But the visceral emotional intimacy of this resonates with that of Women Without Men and On Earth As … these work better for me than the logical
US cover for Daniel Kehlmann’s the Director. A black and white image of a man and woman vintage ‘40s clothing shot from behind standing at a railing looking out across train tracks and empty landscape. Text in bright red.
So I read far enough that this #BookerInternational long list selection makes sense. I got to the ah ha moment. Theme is more memory and how it’s shaped but the intimate isolation is also there. #BookSky #Reading
I'm not saying The Remembered Soldier is a thriller but the chilling penny just dropped. Maybe she just chose him. Maybe he was never her husband at all. Oh it feels completely different now. #BookerInternational #BookerInternationalLongList
#BookerInternational #LongList #Readers:
Is all of #TaiwanTravelogue satire using “the propaganda project” the writer initially rejected? The relationship demonstrating the fraternal invitation of Japanese colonial intervention? Who else has read this? I want to discuss 💬
For those who have read #TaiwanTravelogue curious if I'm overthinking or if the perpetual quest for food is more symbolic? Is it really just a woman snacking her way through Taiwan? Or is it a deeper exploration of colonial consumption given the period/setting #BookerInternational #LongList #Booksky
Book cover for Shida Bazyar’s The Nights Are Quiet in Tehran. Foreground shows the roof and window arches of a white building with a red room and many chimneys against a blue sky
An incredibly intimate portrait of a family who left Iran during the ‘79 Revolution. The shifting narrative allows for a deeper look at motivations, family dynamics and the tension of waiting for revolution to transform Iran again while living in exile abroad.

Book cover for Shahrnush Parsipur's Women Without Men. A dark haired woman sits center of the frame in a white nightgown plucking her right eyebrow looking right at the reader.
Interesting to read this one directly after On Earth As Beneath. Both isolate groups away from society so readers focus on character & universal traits over action. This one elevates due to the interlocking nature of the vignettes, symbolism & #BookerInternational #LongList #BookSky #TranslatedLit
Book cover for Ana Paula Maia’s On Earth As It Is Beneath. The cover light blue. Symbolic images: 2 black hash marks stand inside 2 white tusks everything restrained by a pink slash.
Reminiscent of ChainGang All Stars & Tender Is the Flesh. Prison and violence stripping humanity away from everyone. A gripping meditation on good and evil. The dystopian, isolated setting allows it to resonate & feel universal. #BookerInternational #LongList #BookSky #TranslatedLit
Copies of 'We Are Green and Trembling' by Gabriela Cabezón Cámara and 'The Wax Child' by Olga Ravn.
And so the reading marathon begins. Still have a tower of ARCs, but I must read from the @thebookerprizes.com International longlist! These 2 make a good start point. #booksky #bookseller #bookerinternational
I’m looking for the #TranslatedLit #Readers Help me find you! Since moving to this platform I miss finding unique titles from everywhere. I miss the #BookerInternational banter.
#BookerInternational une lecture à effectuer ! 🧐
My left hand holding a book. Black and white cover art show a person walking as if behind broken glass. Title The Book of Disappearance Ibtisam Azem Translated from the Arabic by Sinan Antoon
Been working hard reading #nonfiction but with the #BookerInternational short list announcement a week away time to get to this one. #IBPReadingChallenge
What do we think will make the international booker longlist at the end of the month ? #bookerinternational
