Lastly, I would also like to thank Miura Yūko, the Japanese translator of Taiwan Travelogue. Her translation, published by chúõkõrõn-Shinsha in 2023, was of great help to me for fact-checking my Japanese transliterations of names and places. Surely Aovama and Chi-chan would be tickled by this: a Taiwanese translator, while bringing the book to the ultimate colonial language of English, has struggled to determine how the Japanese colonial government would have pronounced Taiwanese terms and therefore consulted the Japanese translation of a Taiwanese novel that claims to be a Taiwanese translation of a Japanese novel. Oh dear oh dear oh dear!

I just finished Taiwan Travelogue by Yang Shuang-zi, and it's wonderful. I love this final note by Lin King who translated it into English.

"the Japanese translation of a Taiwanese novel that claims to be a Taiwanese translation of a Japanese novel" 😂

Is all of #TaiwanTravelogue satire using “the propaganda project” the writer initially rejected? The relationship demonstrating the fraternal invitation of Japanese colonial intervention? Who else has read this? I want to discuss 💬

For those who have read #TaiwanTravelogue curious if I'm overthinking or if the perpetual quest for food is more symbolic? Is it really just a woman snacking her way through Taiwan? Or is it a deeper exploration of colonial consumption given the period/setting #BookerInternational #LongList #Booksky

A thread on #recall activists being harassed in #Taiwan 🧵

The partner of author Yang Shuang-zi, whose novel #TaiwanTravelogue won the 2025 U.S. National Book Award for Translated Literature, was attacked last week for holding a recall sign on the side of a road.

#TaiwanTravelogue begins to unfold a story where the relationship between a Japanese author and her Taiwanese translator and guide, becomes a commentary on imperialism, power dynamics, and the ways even the best of intentions can betray an unconscious bias. A lot of food will be eaten along the way.

Teaching in my translation graduate seminar today, both #臺灣漫遊錄 #TaiwanTravelogue by Yang Shuangzi, and in its marvelous English translation by Lin King.
The novel is a 'found text' of a colonial-era Japanese novel based on the author's travel notes, then multiply 'translated.' The meta is meta-ing!

"Shuang-zi" is a pen name, lit. "twins" in Japanese. Before her twin sister and co-author Ruohui died at age 26 from breast cancer, Ruoci promised her that she would finish the novel they started together. #TaiwanTravelogue is therefore their joint work- which the name "Yang Shuang-zi" commemorates.
